New Zealand battled back from an initial top-order wobble to chase down and defeat Afghanistan by five wickets in their World Cup opener in Chennai, as highlighted in the New Zealand National Cricket Team Vs Afghanistan National Cricket Team Match Scorecard.

New Zealand vs Afghanistan
The result serves as an indication that they are no longer vulnerable after suffering an 84-run defeat against Zimbabwe at 2024 World Cup opener that set the path to early exit from major tournaments. Gulbadin Naib led Afghanistan with 63 runs after being put in to bat at MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Tim Seifert is one of several New Zealand batters who has much to prove following their early exit from the last edition. He reached 2000 T20I runs during a win with five boundaries in an innings and will look to add to that total as he takes on Rashid Khan who broke his record that day.
Afghanistan leg-spinner Amir Hayat will relish the chance to repeat his heroics from Afghanistan’s 84-run win against New Zealand last month and will relish repeating them against an opponent he knows well.
Meanwhile, New Zealand have plenty of injury and illness concerns with batsman Rachin Ravindra and all-rounder Finn Allen suffering calf injuries while fast bowlers Lockie Ferguson and Michael Bracewell being unavailable due to illness or injury.
1st Test
New Zealand has quietly emerged as one of the teams to beat in this weather-affected tournament play, and is fast becoming the team to beat. Their adaptable approach and exceptional adaptability has led them to set an unprecedented ICC World Cup semi-final record (14 across all formats).
But their deadly adaptability doesn’t just depend on being able to adjust to conditions; what makes New Zealand dangerous is their way of adapting.
New Zealand are defined by their collective approach to problem-solving. This can be seen most prominently in how they deploy their bowlers – for instance, dropping Cole McConchie after his two wickets in the powerplay of New Zealand’s 2026 ODI victory over South Africa was an inspired move – in a match designed to exploit left-handed batsmen, his offspin ripped through their top order with devastating effect and was instrumental to New Zealand’s convincing win.
Though New Zealand enjoy a healthy lead over Pakistan in their Super 8s group with three points from two matches, to ensure semi-final qualification they must beat England and secure victory by way of a positive Net Run Rate (NRR) result – otherwise overtaking Pakistan could prove extremely challenging.
Rob Walter has only recently assumed his current role of head coach of the Black Caps, yet so far has mostly followed in Gary Stead’s footsteps by upholding their philosophy: creating an environment in which players set aside their individual egos in favour of working towards creating something greater – making them truly dynamic and difficult to predict.

3rd Test
At Trent Bridge, where England began their day strong against New Zealand, England now find themselves trailing as they begin their third and final Test match against them. While initially benign in terms of pace and variation, Trent Bridge now provides enough of both for this decisive match to remain close throughout.
Ben Stokes made an unbeaten 69 in an England innings’ third innings before being replaced at number three by wicketkeeper Daryl Mitchell who also batted unbeaten with 26 not out on an unpredictable surface.
After an early hiccup, England quickly fell behind their required rate as they lost three wickets for 10 runs in quick succession. Joe Root and Jacob Bethell were bowled by seamer Zak Foulkes who came on to replace Blair Tickner who was concussed, before Henry Nicholls edged towards short midwicket where Harry Brook made 58 unassisted.
As England struggled, New Zealand’s pace attack flourished, with Joao Aaron and Mitchell Santner particularly impressive in their early-season form. Errors from home side allowed New Zealand to take full advantage of errors committed in fielding by sending New Zealand batsmen tumbling forward, then punishing hosts by playing boundary-less innings of their own which proved costly for England trying to claw its way back from series defeat against an in-form New Zealand side.
4th Test
The Black Caps will look to turn around their difficult winter when the series returns home for its fifth and final Test at The Kia Oval on Wednesday. Although they came close in their initial match against England at Lord’s, ultimately succumbing to substandard pitches that Sky Sports pundit Nasser Hussain considered subpar; Allan Stokes announced his retirement shortly before being caught at second slip by Zak Foulkes off Trent Boult shortly thereafter, injecting real drama into an otherwise uneven contest that eventually was sealed by Black Caps bowler Gus Atkinson taking five wickets during an up-and-down fourth day against Trent Boult bowlers – something England weren’t used to doing under former captain Andrew.
Matt Fisher will add a much-needed new impetus to New Zealand’s remaining ODI series after earning his maiden call-up, while Jacob Duffy has returned from injury to strengthen the bowling attack.
Their inclusion provides New Zealand with greater squad depth and balance, which could prove crucial in upcoming international fixtures. Fans following the New Zealand National Cricket Team Vs Afghanistan National Cricket Team Match Scorecard will be keen to see how these changes influence New Zealand’s performances against Afghanistan and other top international opponents.
