Timeline of India vs. Australia
India-Australia cricket rivalry is one of the greatest rivalries in international sport, featuring some of the most intense and memorable matches ever seen.
Dating back to November 1947 – just three months after India achieved independence – these teams have met regularly since. Including several Twenty20 internationals which feature some of cricket’s biggest names. Now their 2025 ODI series promises even more memorable cricket!
India has enjoyed an outstanding record against Australia in ODI cricket, winning 84 out of the 152 ODIs played against them since 1979.
Unfortunately, however, in test cricket their results have been more mixed; since their last full series back then neither side have managed to defeat one another convincingly in tests series competition.
This year’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy proved no exception; although India triumphed in four matches against Australia, they failed to overcome their home team advantage and take down Australia in any of the long forms of cricket.
India created history when they won their first ODI series against Australia since 1986/87 – they also completed a clean sweep in three-match T20I series.
Rohit Sharma’s record-setting innings against Australia in the ODI series was undoubtedly one of its highlights. The Indian star became the fastest batsman ever to score 1000 ODI runs and currently ranks second all-time behind Virat Kohli for run scoring. Rohit’s hundred at Sydney was particularly noteworthy as it helped his side chase down an enormous total.
1947-48
India has never managed to triumph at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), yet that does not preclude them from giving it their best shot and winning this series.
Winning tests is no simple task in Australia – and winning these test series requires both hard work and determination from both sides in order to come out victorious at the end.
The series will take place across five major cricket grounds in Australia. Each team will play four matches during this tournament with the fifth and final Test being hosted at Sydney Cricket Ground and being broadcast live across Australia and India.
Australia won the inaugural Test with an easy 172-run victory against India. However, in subsequent Tests both teams scored over 400 runs each time with no winner emerging until both third and fourth tests ended up as draws – leading into an exciting high scoring fifth test between Australia and India which saw both sides record over 300 runs each in what would become an exciting conclusion for both nations.
Jasprit Bumrah became the fastest bowler ever to reach 100 wickets in international cricket with his six-wicket haul in Test five, surpassing Kapil Dev by just five innings – becoming only fast bowler ever to do so quickly.
India have made several adjustments in the form of signing all-rounders Tanush Kotian and Yash Dayal as all-rounders, R Ashwin has decided not to play international cricket any longer and Ravichandran Gill may miss Perth Test after injuring his thumb during practice sessions.
1990s
India’s national cricket team, commonly referred to as “Men in Blue”, represents India in international cricket competition. Administered by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and full member of the International Cricket Council with Test and One Day International status.
Over its history it has produced many notable talents, such as Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Gundappa Viswanath Dilip Vengsarkar Bishan Singh Bedi Mohammad Azharuddin Sachin Tendulkar Sourav Ganguly Virender Sehwag and VVS Laxman to name just some.
In the 1990s, India emerged as a powerhouse both domestically and abroad. They were led by strong captains like C. K. Nayudu, Ajit Wadekar and Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi; great spin bowlers such as Bishan Singh Bedi and Mohammad Azharuddin emerged in this decade; in one-day internationals (ODI), India created exciting batsmen who became household names – particularly after winning the 1983 ICC Cricket World Cup!
Under Virat Kohli’s leadership, Australia’s current cricket team has become one of the finest teams worldwide in both Test and ODI cricket. Under his guidance, Australia have become unbeaten since 1999 at winning six ODI World Cup titles – which they remain undefeated since 1999 at home – four full series have only ever been lost since 1999 when playing Test cricket at home; eight Ashes victories against England with none ever being lost at home is an amazing record, plus they remain undefeated in five T20I matches since 1999 when playing against India; their official song ‘Under the Southern Cross I Stand” is regularly sang after every victory with great reverence among members of their squad!
2000s
India became a formidable team in white-ball cricket during the 2000s. Their star batsmen and all-rounders included Sunil Gavaskar, Mohammad Azharuddin, Kapil Dev, Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar; while Sourav Ganguly proved himself as a magnificent captain who led India to three ICC final wins under him.
Dhoni became captain after Ganguly retired. Under his direction, India won both ODIs and T20Is under him: winning 2016 Asia Cup and reaching final of 2024 ICC World Twenty20; simultaneously they also captured their first ever Test Championship title since 2000 by defeating New Zealand; this victory stands as one of India’s greatest victories to date; currently led by Ravi Shastri and governed by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), they are Full Members of ICC for Test, One Day Internationals (ODIs), Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is).
2010s
India and Australia have met in numerous ODI and Test matches since 2010. Both sides have proven highly competitive, battle hard for victories while competing hard to secure victories, though Australia holds a slight edge against India when it comes to winning ODI series.
Both nations have participated in major tournaments such as ICC World Cup and Champions Trophy where Australia have triumphed more often – winning 10 tournaments against seven for India.
India visited Australia for the first time since 1991/92 and played five tests during this tour, becoming the first team since 2012 to win an overseas series there. Virat Kohli set an unprecedented record during this series by scoring ten centuries in five matches while Jasprit Bumrah made history by collecting 16 wickets across five tests!
Australia and India played out a tie in Melbourne’s opening Test match on a bouncy pitch that favoured pace bowlers, before Australia batted first and reached 377/7, including Michael Hussey’s century; India responded well, reaching 405/7 after Cheteshwar Pujara was dropped and Yuvraj Singh called up as openers.
Optus Stadium in Perth hosted the final test, won by Australia, where Australia elected to bat first after winning the toss and electing to bat first themselves.
Following Hussey and David Warner’s departures, Michael Clarke and Cameron White rebuilt Australia’s innings – Clarke making an astonishing 109 off 96 balls, featuring six fours and one six! India struggled against such an impossible target; ultimately ending in a draw while Bumrah had to leave due to suffering calf strain during play.
