France vs Austria 2024 Group Stage

Kylian Mbappe was not himself at his first European Championship tournament, yet still managed to lead France past Austria with a victory. Though suffering a bloody nose during their game against Austria, Mbappe managed to propel France forward while also continuing his push towards becoming the greatest player ever seen at any competition. He will hope that by becoming one of Lionel Messi’s rivals he can become the greatest of all-time.

France started their Group D campaign against Poland and Netherlands with a win against Austria, setting themselves up to finish in the top two. Didier Deschamps’ side finished second at the 2022 World Cup using similar players, making them tournament favourites.

At 8 minutes in, Mbappe had his first real chance in the game after Antoine Griezmann and Theo Hernandez combined on the left to free him up, as France superstar Mbappe attempted to curl the ball into the far corner but somehow missed. Mbappe will undoubtedly look to make amends next round.

N’Golo Kante’s tireless midfield performance was pivotal to their victory as they dominated possession. Additionally, he provided one of the highlight moments when he made an unexpected challenge against Florian Grillitsch that seemed likely to result in red card suspension but the referee waved off any appeals against it.

Austria are an underdog team in their group and must impress to have any chance at qualifying. After starting off well against Poland – who were widely expected to do well – Ivan Schranz’s side won their opening group stage match by beating them 1-0 with Ralf Rangnick hoping that his Austria can prove themselves as worthy competition opponents and live up to pre-tournament billing.

France vs Austria 2024 Matchday 1

Kylian Mbappe scored his inaugural Euro 2024 goal as France beat Austria 1-0 and got off to an excellent start at Euro 2024. Mbappe, considered among the favourites for the Golden Boot award, was forced off in the second half with suspected broken nose after headbutting defender Kevin Danso; although initially unpunished by referee, Mbappe took matters into his own hands by returning unauthorised to field before eventually being sent off by an official.

France and Austria met for the first time ever in competitive international football and France went into it as heavy favourites. Austria coach Ralf Rangnick promised that his in-form side would go head-to-head against their world champion counterparts and they held strong until halftime with hard tackling styles keeping them alive in the contest.

France was more dynamic after the break but Austria held firm with strong defense and Pentz was an outstanding saver, keeping France at bay until Kante provided Mbappe with the ball he hit off Wober into his own net to give Les Bleus the lead. Hernandez tried to double this advantage but his shot was blocked while Mbappe also saw two attempts from him saved by Pentz.

At the other end, Griezmann crashed into pitch side advertising and was treated for a cut to his forehead before returning to play. Although unable to add to his national team tally in this game, Atletico Madrid star Griezmann will hope for better luck against England next time around.

Real Madrid defender David Alaba was dealt a blow when he was forced out of the tournament due to a knee injury, however. Nonetheless, he will travel as non-playing captain with Arsenal’s William Saliba likely joining Dayot Upamecano from Bayern Munich as the pair play defence together alongside N’Golo Kante, Antoine Griezmann and Adrian Rabiot who will serve in midfield while Marcus Thuram and Ousmane Dembele expected to lead up front for France.

France vs Austria 2024 Matchday 2

France remains in control, as Camavinga sets up Mbappe for a break down the right which results in his shot being easy for Pentz to collect. France then look to run down the clock while they absorb Austrian attacks. 83 mins: Again Mbappe and Griezmann link-up well but Griezmann’s first touch fails him once more with an embarrassing miss!

France defender N’Golo Kante remains uncertain for Saturday’s match due to an ankle injury, while Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni remains sidelined due to a foot issue. Didier Deschamps may opt to adjust the formation with William Saliba from Arsenal likely starting as centre-back alongside Dayot Upamecano; while Antoine Griezmann should continue in his playmaker role with Adrien Rabiot and Marcus Thuram acting as backup players.

Ralf Rangnick, former Manchester United manager and current Austrian coach, leads his side with a high-pressing style that includes plenty of speed in transition. They reached the knockout stage of Euro 2024 after finishing second in their group.

Kylian Mbappe will feature for France following an initial fitness test and is likely to play all 90 minutes against Austria. PSG star Thomas Meunier suffered an injured nose early in France’s 0-0 draw against Canada on Sunday and will be hoping to make an impression following an injury-prone qualifying campaign. Kickoff for Monday’s match takes place at Merkur Spiel-Arena in Dusseldorf at 8pm UK time. France vs Austria 2024 Matchday 3

Kylian Mbappe will lead France for the first time at any major tournament and it won’t be easy – nor one that he wants to lose! With Griezmann, Rabiot and Dembele beside him on either side of the ball, France have the strength in depth and quality needed to beat even their toughest competition.

An intense game, with chances for both sides. France are slowly taking control and starting to edge ahead; with Mbappe’s pace likely becoming key in this match. The second half has started.

Antoine Griezmann has suffered what appears to be a knee injury after colliding with an Austrian attacker as they attempted to reach the ball inside the penalty box. Griezmann is in considerable discomfort but will attempt to play through it.

France are making progress after an uncertain first half. After Thuram fired one over the bar and Mbappe deflected shot narrowly missed its target, momentum is picking up for them now as France look for their second goal of the match.

Austria are struggling to contain France’s fast attacking players and two of their defenders have already been booked, with Danso taking his turn after pulling back Giroud backwards.

As Mbappe and his teammates continue creating chances, the referee waves play on – until Sabitzer makes an excellent save by heading wide from an onrushing cross from the right.

At the end of it all, both teams were less than impressive as they played to a dull draw – France were ultimately deserving winners while Austria should have collected all three points.

At 8pm tonight, talkSPORT will have full coverage of Group D at Merkur Spiel-Arena in Dusseldorf with Hugh Woozencroft hosting with Joe Shennan and former Scotland striker Chris Iwelumo providing commentary.
