Kohli
Kohli has long dominated international cricket as India’s record run-scorer across three formats. A once chubby teenager with gelled hair who burst onto the scene by leading his Under-19 team to victory at the World Cup in Kuala Lumpur early 2008 made him instantly famous, standing out among saintly figures worthy of their own biographies with his unorthodox yet gritty intensity that shone through.
Kohli quickly made an impactful debut as an one-day international player, soon earning regular caps against top opponents and amassing five centuries in just 11 ODI matches. By the time of his first Test match in Australia in 2011, Kohli had already scored five centuries.
At first he struggled with Australia’s bouncy wickets but made significant strides during a breakout performance in his third Test when he adopted an open stance and added back-foot shots into his arsenal.
He went on to score 793 runs in the series, including two centuries – an extraordinary performance which set the foundation of Kohli’s extraordinary run that would see him top all formats’ batting rankings.
After impressive performances at the 2022 Asia Cup, he earned a spot in India’s squad for their home World Cup where he upped his game further.
During that tournament he amassed the most number of ODI runs to beat Sachin Tendulkar’s record for being first to reach multiples of nine-thousand runs fastest. Additionally he became first batsman ever to complete three double centuries in one innings while simultaneously being named ICC ODI cricketer of year twice during his career.
His hunger for runs did not wane after taking up permanent captaincy of RCB; in 2016, he amassed 973 runs in the Indian Premier League as his franchise finished runners-up.
At the 2023 ODI World Cup, Kohli carried his fine form into group stages against South Africa and Bangladesh before helping India seal a thrilling win that ended an 11-year trophy drought with an excellent showing in the final.
Tendulkar
Sachin Tendulkar was one of India’s greatest cricketing figures, dominating international cricket for 24 years as a batsman – widely considered the greatest Test and ODI player of all time. Since making his debut in 1989 until retiring in 2013 after scoring 100 centuries across all formats of play he also set numerous other records in both forms of play.
Tendulkar remains an icon of our times, inspiring many young cricketers to aspire to his achievements. However, people must understand several facts before trying to break his records. First of all, people need to realize that a high score and century are two distinct concepts;
Whereas one rewards an exceptional innings while the latter requires consistent performances over extended time periods – therefore question of “highest score” should more closely relate to consistency than to individual performance quality.
Additionally, the difference between a high score and a century often depends on the format of the game itself. For instance, it’s much harder to reach century in Test matches compared to Twenty20 matches due to different rules in each format; thus comparing players is best done through looking at their batting averages in each format.
Tendulkar made history in a Twenty20 match at Wankhede Stadium against Kochi Tuskers Kerala with an extraordinary 66 off 48 balls for Mumbai Indians on 15 April 2011. His innings included 13 fours and three sixes; however, Mumbai fell by eight wickets to Brendon McCullum and Mahela Jayawardene despite Tendulkar’s efforts – it will go down as one of the greatest performances ever witnessed during ODI cricket history.
Sehwag
Virender Sehwag was an Indian cricketer renowned for being one of the most destructive openers of his era, earning himself the reputation as an outstanding opening batsman and scoring over 5000 runs across both Test and ODI cricket formats.
Sehwag earned himself induction into India Cricket Hall of Fame as well as Wisden International Batsman of the Year honours in 2005; known for his attacking batting style he has often been described as the best to watch during Test cricket matches.
Sehwag first made his debut for Delhi during the 1997-98 season and quickly established himself as a key member. That year he also represented North Zone in the Duleep Trophy and finished fifth on its overall run-scoring list.
Later in January 2002 he was promoted to India ODI squad opening his innings alongside Sachin Tendulkar against England and New Zealand; earning himself six wickets wins against England at Kanpur as a result of this effort.
Sehwag continued his impressive performances over the following matches and amassed 420 runs overall in this series against New Zealand, including an unassisted 60-ball century to set his performance standards going forward. Following Rahul Dravid’s insistence, Sehwag was included as part of India’s squad for 2007 Cricket World Cup tournament.
His World Cup performance was variable but he still managed to make some impressive runs – scoring 174 in four matches – though often struggled to reach three figures and was less effective as an opening batsman than at scoring runs with his middle order batsmen.
Since retiring from international cricket in 2013, Sehwag was an integral member of the Delhi Daredevils franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
He was signed for its eighth edition, but his performances were not as consistent, and he was eventually dropped from the tournament. He returned for the subsequent season, where he scored an outstanding 58-ball 122 against Kings XI Punjab.
His explosive batting style and remarkable scoring ability also make him relevant when discussing Who Scored Highest Runs In Odi Match, particularly among India’s most prolific batsmen.
