Defensive Line
Oregon Ducks Football team has started off 2019 undefeated thanks to its defense. Points allowed have seen significant improvement from previous year, and defensive line has been one of the team’s major strengths.
Matt Tuioti joined Oregon this offseason after serving two seasons at Nebraska where his unit allowed 8.6 fewer points and 67.1 fewer yards per game than before his arrival – and produced two NFL Draft picks Carlos Davis and Khalil Davis! Tuioti is seen as a key catalyst to Oregon’s improved defensive fortunes.
Tuioti has extensive experience at multiple schools, including Cal and Hawaii where he spent much of his early coaching career as high school coach. Additionally, he served as an assistant coach for Michigan as well as Cleveland Browns before serving as offensive quality control coach.
In 2025, the Ducks suffered significant player departures on defense; none more so than from their defensive line group. Derrick Harmon and Jamaree Caldwell both went in the first round of the draft while Keyon-Ware Hudson has yet to establish himself as a regular starting player.
Ducks defensive talent has the ability to step up this season. Former 4-star recruits like Jericho Johnson and Xadavien Sims could play key roles this season; both have potential impact players that could help the Ducks turn things around quickly.
Terrance Green could play an instrumental role on this Ducks defense this season. Although not an elite recruit, he is a large and physical player with big potential to contribute big time. They’re also hopeful freshman Bear Alexander continues his improvement as time passes.
Running Backs
Oregon Ducks Football team relies heavily on its running back position to score points and break big plays, so players in this position must be versatile, fast and able to read defense and make adjustments as necessary. Injuries may compromise performance negatively as well.
Ducks football has long been known for producing dynamic running backs like Legarrette Blount. Blount amassed 1,002 yards during his collegiate career and was recognized with two All-American honors; later playing for the NFL where he won three Super Bowls and ended as league leading rusher during his final campaign.
Justin Herbert has made headlines this season as an All-American running back for Oregon. This sophomore has amassed over 1,300 yards this season and ranks among the best runners nationwide. Additionally, he’s become one of the Pac 12’s premier play-makers with 21 touchdowns scored thus far this year.
Running game success and increased defense strength under Mike Lanning have propelled them into an elite offensive unit. Furthermore, big plays are limited and turnovers created more effectively as a result.
Oregon’s impressive record has been marred by injury concerns this season. Losing starting quarterback Justin Herbert for the remainder of the year was a serious setback to their chances of reaching Atlanta for a national title game. If Oregon hopes to keep making noise on March Madness weekend, they will need a viable replacement quarterback before then.
Indiana quickly took control of the game early in the first quarter when D’Angelo Ponds returned an interception from Oregon quarterback Dante Moore 25 yards for a touchdown and scored just three plays later to extend their lead to 21-0.

Quarterbacks
Oregon Ducks football quarterbacks make an enormous contribution to their team’s performance. Over the years, great Oregon quarterbacks such as Marcus Mariota, Jeremiah Masoli, and Darren Thomas have led them on offense and become one of the premier college teams when their offense is clicking.
Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert has been instrumental to Oregon’s success this year. The sophomore threw for nearly 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns through three wins; his deep passing game and run threat are also significant assets to their offense; in fact, each of his last two games featured more than 100 yards rushing!
One key to the Ducks’ success this season has been their defense, led by defensive coordinator Dan Lanning who has assembled an outstanding unit that makes scoring difficult.
Oregon Ducks will wear pink helmets and uniforms in support of breast cancer awareness during their game against Indiana on September 16th.
In partnership with Kay Yow Cancer Center, Oregon will raise funds and awareness of breast cancer through this campaign. Their pink uniforms feature a visor with the words “Pink Out Cancer”, as well as an alternate helmet design bearing this text.
Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza has also had an exceptional game, tossing for 285 yards and two touchdowns while also being very efficient by completing 80% of his passes with only two interceptions thrown so far this year. As such, he is one of Indiana’s leading contenders for the Heisman Trophy, having already led them to two victories this year.
Oregon and Indiana’s rivalry is one of the marquee events each season, often deciding rankings, recruits and College Football Playoff positions. Games have taken place at several different venues – Rose Bowl and Levi’s Stadium being popular places – making this rivalry one of the greatest rivalries in college football history.
Wide Receivers
Oregon boasts an array of talented wide receivers that can take control of games. These receivers are the cornerstone of Oregon’s fast-paced attack and often cause mismatches against opposing defenses, making Oregon one of the premier offenses nationwide this season, scoring more points than any other team and winning seven out of their 11 matches to reach 12-4 with top-10 national ranking.
Jonathan Taylor leads Oregon’s rushing attack as a sophomore with 1,385 yards and 17 touchdowns on his way to becoming a finalist for the Heisman Trophy this season, becoming their first player since LaMichael James in 2010 to receive multiple Heisman votes in multiple years.
Taylor has proven himself an outstanding receiver this season as well. With a knack for finding open space and being able to gain yards after the catch, he’s become a vital piece of Oregon’s offense – contributing immensely to its success and making them such a formidable foe in 2017.
This game will be crucial in deciding who advances to the College Football Playoff final and who earns a spot in a New Year’s Six bowl game.
