England: Amy Jones (c)
Amy Jones shone brightest for England at Edgbaston as she scored an outstanding 67 from 53 balls to secure England a massive total of 337 and secure their semi-final place in the tournament. Birmingham-born wicketkeeper Amy Knight set her country on its path toward semi-final glory by her performance despite Heather Knight’s absence and played her part in helping England reach such heights of success.
England’s batsmen found their form after an initial slow start in this match and successfully navigated through their innings with great style. Bairstow, Root and Stokes each scored fifties while Jos Buttler and Danielle Gibson provided crucial late innings support which propelled England across the finish line with ease.
Pakistan responded in similar fashion, losing several key players early. Babar Azam was dismissed for a golden duck off Reece Topley before Shadab Khan, Iftikhar Ahmed and Shaheen Shah Afridi all fell to English quick bowlers. Mohammad Wasim kept their hopes alive but regular wickets saw Pakistan virtually eliminated from competition.

After an unimpressive start in Birmingham, England erupted with an outstanding display of batting and bowling before an enthusiastic Edgbaston crowd. Jos Buttler’s unbeaten 84 off 51 balls stood out, as did Heather Knight’s all-round performance and Danielle Gibson’s 41 not out which featured two sixes and three fours!
England batting, which had underperformed so far in this tournament, made a comeback and powered to 337/7 on a low wicket with plenty of turn. Bairstow, Root and Stokes each hit fifties to propel England up the order.
Pakistan’s batsmen struggled against England’s spinners and were completely overwhelmed by Jofra Archer’s pace – taking two wickets on his return after more than an year’s absence and helping dismantle Pakistan’s innings in the process.
Pakistan’s innings unraveled rapidly following the loss of Babar Azam and Shoaib Malik at rapid rate, leaving an unrealistic target and near-impossible NRR target if they wanted to qualify for the semi-finals. England took control with their ball, with David Willey’s final international match performance providing excellent new ball pace before spin twins Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid provided significant contributions before England claimed victory within 23.3 overs to take an important step towards qualifying for Champions Trophy qualification.
Jos Buttler (wk)
Jos Buttler has emerged as England’s star player this World Cup. He made an outstanding 59 against New Zealand in the World Cup Final and combined with Ben Stokes to add 110 runs for fifth wicket to pull England back into contention in an exciting game. Additionally, Buttler batted in super over and ran out Martin Guptill to seal an important win and complete an historic tournament victory!
Buttler earned himself a place in the Test squad after an outstanding year in T20I cricket, but struggled for runs during Ashes series and South Africa tour; at times it even looked like Buttler may lose his place; but, thanks to an astonishing 61-ball hundred against Sri Lanka at home ODI venue he was able to bring things back together and maintain his place.
Buttler will look to do just that against Pakistan in this match at Edgbaston. He is an adept batsman capable of both caution and aggression; capable of hitting huge shots when necessary and will certainly cause opposition bowlers some concern in these conditions. Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes may provide him with some valuable support by taking advantage of its slower surface for some explosive hitting at Edgbaston.
Ben Stokes (wk)
Ben Stokes was instrumental in England winning the 2019 ODI World Cup. His batting was at times heroic and fielding breathtaking; in particular his stunning fielding against New Zealand bowlers during Lord’s final when his 84* helped secure a tie before Jos Buttler and him laid down a nerve-wracking super over victory plan together. Later, his superb swashbuckling batting helped lead them to their third Ashes triumph at Headingley with another 135* performance!
Sadia struck another boundary past backward point before cutting one through extra cover for another boundary in her previous over. Sadia is once again using spin triplets to slow Pakistan’s innings down.
Buttler opened his final over with a six, only to be run out by Haris Rauf shortly thereafter for a golden duck as England closed on 337/9. Gibson managed to snare him at gully and the game concluded as a draw. Durham star Buttler enjoyed an outstanding performance which should earn him another Test recall; hopefully repeating it in the second Test should ensure success as well as playing alongside Moeen Ali once more; they both look forward to learning from one another; according to Buttler it would be “great opportunity for me personally and for him and me in making me better”.

After an initially slow start, England’s batting took off when Bairstow, Root and Stokes all scored fifties to propel them. England added 266 runs in their final 10 overs to reach 337 before their innings suddenly collapsed; Maia Bouchier, Danni Wyatt, Alice Capsey all fell cheaply before Freya Kemp was run out lbw for a duck.
Jofra Archer made an impressive return for England after nearly a year out due to injury, taking two wickets as Pakistan were bowled out for 160 in reply. Sophie Ecclestone and Charlie Dean played their parts as spinners as England maintain pressure over Pakistan heading into their remaining three T20Is before meeting back up again in New Zealand.
David Willey returned to his bowling attack, with Shaheen Afridi and Agha Salman both at the crease. Afridi hit boundaries on both deliveries before hitting an incredible SIX off ball five! Gus Atkinson joined David Willey’s attack shortly thereafter, dismissing Salman via an LBW dismissal in delivery four of the 38th over – marking 100 ODI wickets taken!
Sophie Ecclestone (wk)
Sophie Ecclestone made an unforgettable contribution for England in the World Cup opening match, bowling economically while excelling with both bat and ball. A member of Cheshire’s 2022 Women’s County Championship-winning side as a junior member, Ecclestone has become one of the country’s most enticing cricketers since joining Cheshire as one of its stand-in bowlers.
Helsby High School pupil Lucy West trained her skills at Helsby Cricket Club’s acclaimed junior section before making her IT20 debut against Nottinghamshire at just 16 years old. Soon thereafter she made the leap into England’s senior team as their primary T20 spinner.
Ecclestone currently holds the world number-one T20I bowler rank. Her rise has been meteoric; in just 70 matches she claimed 97 wickets at an average of 27.44 runs per match! Adding to her brilliance as both batsperson and bowler, Ecclestone has amassed 1,056 runs at 27.44 average across T20Is.
Gibson immediately attacked Rameen with the new ball, hitting three boundaries from her first two balls before pulling an ugly shot over backward point and being dropped at long-on. But she soon rebounded with two fours off Alice Capsey – including an impressive run out that allowed Gibson to complete her impressive cameo of 41 not out from 21 balls with one over remaining on her innings!
