BAN vs IRE
Bangladesh overpowered Ireland to win the opening Test match of Sylhet by an innings and 47 runs, although Ireland made some attempts on day four but were well behind their asking rate. Rishad Hossain and Mustafizur Rahman each took three wickets while Tanzid Hasan caught five balls to seal victory for Bangladesh.
Mushfiqur Rahim’s unbeaten century helped Bangladesh set Ireland an impossible target of 509 on the fifth day. Ireland struggled against Hasan Murad’s left-arm spinner spell before Curtis Campher, Andy McBrine, and Gavin Hoey were dismissed to complete an emphatic 217 run win for Bangladesh.
Ireland captain Paul Stirling scored his maiden boundary within seven overs but would struggle against Bangladesh’s high quality spin bowling, eventually succumbing to their dominance and succumbing to an innings defeat despite some courageous batting from Stephen Doheny, Campher, and Hoey.
Bangladesh openers performed brilliantly on the final day of the Test match in Sylhet, setting themselves up in an advantageous position for an easy victory. Unfortunately, they lost two quick wickets early in their chase and never recovered thereafter; ultimately it was Tanzid Hasan’s unbeaten half-century that propelled Bangladesh to victory with 6.2 overs to spare – also becoming the first player from any full ICC member nation to take five catches in a Test match!
1st T20I
Ireland were bowled out for just 117 at home against Bangladesh, as they were taken apart by Tanzid Hasan Sakib who scored an unbeaten 55 not out to help ensure an eight wicket win with just over six overs remaining – Rishad Hossain and Mustafizur Rahman both took three wickets each to expose Irish batting and bowling strategies.
Irish batsmen have not managed a boundary in 33 balls, needing big scores if they hope to keep pace. Saifuddin took an impressive catch to prevent Paul Stirling from scoring four, giving Bangladesh complete control here.
Paul Stirling got off to a promising start in Ireland’s powerplay, but can no longer find the way to a big total. When trying a flat shot off his backfoot it ends up going straight for deep backward square-leg and he walks back for just 17 off 10 balls.
Gareth Delany takes to the crease and attempts to hit Raviful Islam for a six over midwicket off Raviful Islam but fails to connect cleanly, playing it straight back to Mustafizur Rahman at deep midwicket instead. This costly miss was particularly costly given Ireland’s inability to find runs.
Bangladesh captain Litton Das is unbeaten on 50, helping bring up their partnership of 102 in just 30 balls with Parvez Hossain Emon. Ireland have lost both openers, leaving themselves vulnerable.
Bangladeshi skipper Mashrafe Mortaza strikes again in the second over, dismissing Harry Tector for 17 off 10 ball and thus ending Ireland’s chase – at least they managed to secure one victory so far! – against Bangladesh. With six overs remaining Ireland have no hope left, as Bangladesh have moved onto 131/0 against them with no danger from Ireland remaining. The Bangladeshis appear in control as they move past 131-1 against Ireland after Ireland had completed their chase; their hopes were dashed.
2nd T20I
Bangladesh secured an emphatic seven wicket victory over Ireland in their second T20 International, thanks to Tanzid Hasan’s brilliant half century and Parvez Hossain’s four wicket haul. Bangladesh bowlers also performed admirably and managed to restrict Ireland to an manageable total.
Irish batsmen struggled to score enough runs and were eventually bowled out for just 117 runs. Paul Stirling’s 33 helped set them on their way, but their chances quickly dimmed once Bangladesh launched their attack; Rishad Hossain eventually took three wickets within one over from Rishad Hossain – effectively ending Ireland’s chances.
Hossain continued his dominating performance by quickly dismissing Gareth Delany for seven. The Irish opener tried for a pull but failed to connect, leaving Hossain no option but to catch him at deep backward square leg for seven. Ireland now need another fifty runs if they want any chance at staying in contention in this match.
Litton Das is making good contact with the ball, hitting his fourth four of this over and finding the boundary for four runs. Unfortunately, he hasn’t found a six in quite some time and it appears unlikely that today will be any different.
Irish are having difficulty scoring runs since the end of the powerplay ended and have not cleared the fence since. Rishad Hossain is proving difficult for Irish to break through as he has now removed Harry Tector.
Ireland must work tirelessly in order to avoid being whitewashed in this series. They need to score quickly while providing top order batsmen with support batting options; Ireland have enough talent available that they will need to step up and deliver impressive performances on this crucial test match.
3rd T20I
On Tuesday, 2 December at Bir Sreshtho Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Stadium in Chattogram – for the third and final T20I between Bangladesh and Ireland in their series – the third and final Twenty20 International will take place. Bangladesh have never played in this venue known for its short boundaries and lightning quick outfield before.
This match will be shown live in India via JioHotstar and Star Sports network television channels, with fans also having access to live streaming on both apps and websites of these channels.
Ireland and Bangladesh will both look to rebound after two disappointing matches of the series, hoping that Irish fans don’t repeat what happened against Bangladesh, while Bangladesh aims to maintain their hopes of reaching the semi-finals by winning.
Bangladesh are expected to field an impressive side for this game, featuring Mustafizur Rahman and Litton Das as key contributors. Their hope will be to avenge their 171-run loss against Ireland due to an underwhelming batting performance on their part in game two.
Tanzid Hasan Sakib once again displayed his remarkable catching abilities by taking two more catches in this over, becoming the first Bangladesh player ever to claim five in one T20I and beating Sri Lankan Dinesh Karthik’s previous record of four!
As Ireland find themselves struggling at 48/2 after five overs, runs are hard-fought for. A double off Mohammad Saifuddin provides them with some hope, yet Paul Stirling misses his opportunity to hit it over midwicket and is caught by Samiudeen Amin instead.
Irish batsmen have struggled to get their innings going and as such have lost momentum. Tilak Varma’s 62 off 34 balls has been one of many positive signs, yet more players need to come through and match his ability if Ireland hope to reach the last four.
This game presents Ireland with an opportunity to show that they can match up against some of the top sides in T20 cricket; Shubman Gill will hope that he can showcase his worthiness before being chosen as part of their starting eleven for next game.
