Domestic heavyweights Mumbai and Karnataka will go head-to-head in a high-stakes Vijay Hazare Trophy quarterfinal at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru on Monday.

In-form batsman Sarfaraz Khan will look to continue his superb form in the tournament with another big score while Devdutt Padikkal has shown he can translate his T20 prowess into the 50-over game as well.

Mumbai have made a good start to their innings, with openers Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Ishan Mulchandani making steady contributions. But despite striking a six and a boundary, the pair were eventually dismissed by Vidyadhar Patil in quick succession.

Patil produced a sharp delivery that beat Raghuvanshi’s defence and crashed into the stumps to have him caught at backward point for 20 off 32 balls. Musheer Khan then walked in with intent but was unable to capitalise on his solid start, finding Padikkal’s left-arm spin for just nine off seven balls.

The experienced Karun Nair and the left-handed openers Devdutt Padikkal and Karun Nair were in sublime form as they took Karnataka to a healthy 187 for one in 33 overs chasing Mumbai’s modest total when rain interrupted play.

Padikkal remained unbeaten on 81 and Nair was on 74 not out as Karnataka were declared winners after the VJD method was applied at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence.

Defending champions Mumbai suffered an early blow as opener Lokesh Rahul was ruled out with a hamstring injury. His absence could leave the hosts vulnerable as he is a vital cog in their batting line-up.

However, Mumbai have plenty of experience with players like Varun Aaron and Pragyan Ojha in their side. Meanwhile, Karnataka have a decent team as well and will be eager to carry their winning momentum from the Ranji Trophy final against Mumbai.

Defending champions Karnataka stormed into the semifinals of the Vijay Hazare Trophy by beating Mumbai by 54 runs via the VJD method at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru on Monday. The tournament’s leading run-getter Devdutt Padikkal remained unbeaten on 81 while veteran India batter Karun Nair was also unbeaten on 74 as rain brought an early end to the match.

Uttar Pradesh captain Sarfaraz Khan and Karnataka batsman Devdutt Padikkal will hope to continue their excellent form when the two sides meet in the quarterfinals of the Ranji Trophy at the BCCI Centre of Excellence on Monday. The in-form Sarfaraz has seamlessly carried his explosive T20 form into the 50-over game and struck the fastest fifty by an Indian in men’s List A cricket in the final league match against Punjab.

Meanwhile, Padikkal has become the only player to score a double century in this season’s competition, having already amassed 640 runs from seven innings. His consistent performances have put him in contention for future ODI selections as national selectors look toward the 2027 World Cup.

Despite an early jolt, Mumbai have rallied well to reach 284 for eight in their first innings. Skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat, and the visitors were soon in a dominant position. Ajinkya Rahane was unbeaten on 86 while the likes of Harvik Desai, Prerak Mankad and Chirag Jani were all in good nick with the bat.

However, the innings took a turn for the worse in the next over as Vidyadhar Patil bowled Ishan Mulchandani for 20 off 32 balls. He then dismissed Musheer Khan, who had looked to attack but sparked a collapse in Mumbai’s middle order. Siddhesh Lad and Shams Mulani have forged a solid partnership, batting with composure and sensibly selecting their shots, to steady Mumbai’s innings after an early collapse. But a late counterattack from Angkrish Raghuvanshi saw them fall short of a well-deserved century.

Mumbai cricket team beat Karnataka cricket team by 5 wickets in the 4th Quarter Final First-class match at Bandra Kurla Complex Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy, Mumbai. KL Rahul was named Player of the Match for his outstanding contribution with bat and ball. He was awarded a special award from Mumbai’s Chief Coach Ravi Shastri, who was present at the game.

Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Ishan Mulchandani got Mumbai off to a solid start, batting with composure and finding boundaries at regular intervals.

The duo shared a 107-run stand before the latter was bowled by Vidyadhar Patil. He produced a sharp delivery which beat Raghuvanshi’s defence and crashed into the stumps. Mumbai’s chase was then accelerated by Siddhesh Lad and Shams Mulani, who batted with confidence and judicious shot selection to keep the scoreboard moving.

The left-right pair of R Samarth and Devdutt Padikkal have given Karnataka a strong start to their innings against Mumbai, who are chasing a target of 126 for victory. The visitors were 79/0 at lunch, with Samarth and Padikkal in good form as they kept the run-rate ticking over.

But post-lunch, Shashank Attarde pegged back the visitors with a fine spell of fast bowling. He trapped Padikkal in front of the wicket and then dismissed debutant Rohan Kadam and Abhishek Reddy as Mumbai moved to 93/3.

The game is poised at a critical stage as Mumbai struggle to find the right combination at the top of the order. They lost Akhil Herwadkar early, and Jay Bista fell short of a century after facing 111 balls.

Having won the Ranji Trophy last week, Karnataka are in a confident mood and would be eager to win the Irani Trophy as well. The defending champions have a host of players who could be in the radar of selectors for the 2027 ODI World Cup, including captain Vinay Kumar and lanky Abhimanyu Mithun. A win against a decent Rest of India side would send out a positive message to the national selectors ahead of the upcoming season.

Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Ishan Mulchandani are looking in fine touch as they build a solid opening partnership for Mumbai. Both players are rotating the strike and finding boundaries with regularity to keep the scoreboard moving.

Chetan Sakariya draws first blood as he dismisses wicketkeeper-batsman Aryan Juyal for a duck. A loud LBW call and a diving dive by Karun Nair ensures the dismissal.

A few overs later, Musheer Khan becomes the next victim for Mumbai. The batsman tries to play an expansive shot but ends up offering a catch to Devdutt Padikkal off Vidyadhar Patil. The dismissal ends the hopes of a quick rebuild for the hosts who are now wobbling at 46 for two.

Siddhesh Lad and Shams Mulani have kept the run-rate going for Mumbai after early jolts left them in trouble against Karnataka. The duo have remained calm under pressure and are rotating the strike well while also finding boundaries with ease.

The hosts lost captain Tushar Deshpande to injury in the ninth over, forcing him to retire hurt. Devdutt Padikkal then came on to bowl and struck a couple of key blows. He got the better of Akash Anand as the latter was caught at gully off his own bowling. He then removed the lower order, with Suryansh Shedge falling lbw off a Mohit Avasthi delivery.

Devdutt Padikkal remained unbeaten on 81 and Karun Nair was on 74 not out as rain brought an early end to the Vijay Hazare Trophy quarterfinal at BCCI’s Centre of Excellence, Bengaluru on Monday. Saurashtra, who were chasing 255 at that stage, will advance to the semifinals through the VJD method.

Abhishek Goswami is nearing a century for UP against Saurashtra. The left-hander is batting in the 80s and looks set for a big score. But Prasanta Rana traps him lbw, and UP lose another big run-getter.
