History
West Indian cricket team has an illustrious and longstanding history. Made up of players from English-speaking Caribbean nations such as Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Guyana Jamaica Saint Lucia Trinidad Tobago Leeward Islands the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) governs this team.
The first combined West Indian team was established in 1928 and quickly rose to become one of the dominant forces in world cricket.
Touring England for their maiden Test series win in 1950 was only the start of a long journey that would see West Indies dominate in subsequent decades – winning 14 Test matches against England alone; 9 against Pakistan; four against South Africa and 2 against New Zealand!
However, Windies cricket experienced its initial downfall between 1976-77 when several prominent players including Richie Richardson, Desmond Haynes, and Courtney Walsh signed with Australian sports magnate Kerry Packer’s World Series Cricket competition (WSC).
Although WICB allowed these players to tour Australia as guests of WSC, disputes over payments and selection of certain players led to disagreements and ultimately led them withdrawing from touring plans altogether.
West Indies cricket was experiencing difficulties during the early 1990s due to retirements such as Richards, Greenidge and Dujon leaving behind an inexperienced and younger team, which saw their batting averages and strike rates decline rapidly. Nevertheless, they managed to win numerous one-day internationals while their Test record suffered.
West Indies cricket team made great strides towards rebuilding and recovering some of their former glory during the late 1990s, thanks to players like Darren Sammy, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, and Brian Lara emerging.
As a result, they won their first Test series since 1972 against India as well as winning another ten-match series against Pakistan; yet struggled in ODI and Twenty20 arenas where England defeated them both times at World Cup final and group stages respectively.
ODIs
ODIs (One-Day Internationals) are the most frequently played form of cricket between two teams, held under standard one-day rules and open to competition by any nation granted an ODI status by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
A team can earn points for every ODI it wins; any points lost will then go towards its overall rankings that determine its spot on the ICC ODI Table.
At an ODI match, bowling teams may set two fielding restrictions in the initial 10 overs (known as the mandatory powerplay), which can either be offensive or defensive in nature. Subsequently, all three kinds of fields may be set during an innings’s final 10 overs.
ODIs are one of the world’s most beloved forms of cricket and boast some of the highest stakes available in global sport. T20Is
Twenty20 format has revolutionised cricket. Unlike ODIs and Tests that may last five days, Twenty20 games are quick-paced affairs with lots of action packed into each match – meaning teams strive to score as many runs as they can in limited time available to them – providing great entertainment while testing bowlers’ skills as they attempt to hit big hits and create high drama.
West Indies and Pakistan have played 23 T20Is since 2017. Of those games, six were won by West Indies while there were two losses apiece, for an average run score of 200.6 runs per match by Pakistan.
At first light of day –
West Indies started the day on an inauspicious note as Mohammad Abbas and Khurram Shahzad made life difficult for their hosts on a damp pitch.
But Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Kavem Hodge managed to turn things around by sharing a 51-run partnership that gave West Indies some momentum.
But their joy was short-lived as Aamer Jamal struck twice within three balls to remove Chanderpaul and Hodge from West Indies innings at tea, leaving West Indies on 127/3. Amir Jangoo attempted to maintain their run rate but Abbas used an innovative review technique to trap him lbw for 21 runs.
West Indies won their game with almost four overs left to spare despite losing three wickets for only seven runs at Providence Stadium in Guyana, following up their win over India in the inaugural T20I of this four-match series. This marked West Indies’ second successive T20I win.
Before lunch on day four, Pakistan opener Babar Azam scored an unbeaten 58 to help his side reach 211 for victory after they had been set a target of 212.
However, Jayden Seales quickly dismantled any hopes Pakistan had of an historic Test win with five wickets taken on day four, including Mohammad Abbas as Windies fast bowler Jayden Seales made sure victory would come soon after tea time.
Tests
West Indies defeated Pakistan at Brian Lara Stadium by an innings and 40 runs, thanks to brilliant bowling performances by West Indian bowlers led by Jaden Seales who collected five wickets throughout the day to keep Pakistan’s batting order under pressure while also clearing away dangerous batsmen such as Mohammad Rizwan and Aamer Jamal to set up an easy victory for West Indies.
The opening session was an uneasy struggle between both sides, with neither able to break through to victory. Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Kavem Hodge enjoyed a vital 51-run partnership before Chanderpaul was caught at backward point for 21 by Salman Ali Agha. Hodge kept his focus and eventually reached half a century; taking their score to 127/3 at tea.
Mohammad Abbas and Khurram Shahzad made full use of the damp conditions early in the day to put pressure on Australia, but were cut short by rain just after 20 overs had passed.
Windies bowlers did an admirable job of restricting Pakistan’s scoring rate on a slow and sluggish pitch despite losing wickets at regular intervals. Kavem Hodge and Shai Hope played brilliantly to keep up the run rate, until both their innings were ended by poor shot selection combined with effective bowling from Pakistan.
On Sunday, the second Test at the same ground will commence as the West Indies Cricket Team Vs Pakistan National Cricket Team Timeline continues with another crucial chapter in this historic rivalry. Both sides will look to extend their dominance and take control of the series with a strong performance.
