Shai Hope (c)
Shai Hope’s unbeaten 82 helped West Indies claim an easy win against USA in Barbados to stay at the top of Group F in Super 8s. The Bajan star was in devastating form, clearing eight ropes in as many deliveries while adding four boundaries – especially devastating against spinners, taking full advantage of their slow balls to find boundaries with ease.
Hope was brought back into the lineup following Brandon King’s injury and quickly demonstrated why he is one of the premier T20 batsmen worldwide. He easily handled USA bowling attack while showing his versatility by hitting cleanly from both sides of the ground.
USA captain Corey Anderson was dismissed in the third over after an attempt at an aggressive big slog sweep against Andre Russell’s slower delivery was caught by Roston Chase at point. USA hopes of late comebacks were further undermined when Andries Gous and Nitish Kumar fell quickly afterward to Milind Kumar and Shadley van Schalkwyk respectively.
But the USA found themselves struggling to gain any ground, and experienced another setback when Van Schalkwyk bowler Corey Anderson with a full delivery. USA’s batting looked disorganized after that dismissal and their chances of further success in this competition effectively ended as a result of this blow.
Aaron Jones stated that even though USA was on the losing side, their team will learn from this defeat and come back stronger against South Africa in their next match. Jones added that their loss of wickets in middle overs hindered their run-scoring tempo and noted they must pick up early wickets if they wish to make their comeback successful.
Saurabh Netravalkar bowled short on off and Shai Hope hit it straight down the ground and over midwicket for an unhittable six! He continued his run with a stunning four off half volley leg side before flicking a slower ball wide long-on for another four.
Harmeet Singh (wk)
Losses for USA in both opening Super 8 games have left them vulnerable, and a loss here would see them eliminated from competition – an incredible shame after their stellar group stage performance! But now they face an insurmountable task against a full strength West Indies squad.
Windies bowlers performed admirably to limit US scoring runs during their innings, taking two wickets between Roston Chase and Andre Russell that put pressure on hosts USA to score. USA had some difficulty scoring runs during middle overs when Andries Gous and Nitish Kumar’s partnership ended; Corey Anderson and Harmeet Singh helped restore momentum for them however.
Singh is a left-handed batsman and slow left-arm orthodox spinner who plays T20 league cricket for Atlanta Riders in the US Masters T10 tournament and Seattle Orcas in Major League Cricket. In one tournament he collected four wickets; now against West Indies it could add even more!
He has played in three four-wicket innings for the USA and currently averages 43 in T20Is for them. In his last six innings he has not been dismissed averaging 67 from 37 balls with seven boundaries and two sixes.
However, he is struggling against the pace of Windies bowlers. He was caught behind off a slog sweep attempt against Alzarri Joseph and attempted a reverse sweep against Gudakesh Motie but completely missed the line in 17th over. Out for a duck and runs-scoring has significantly diminished.
But the Americans haven’t given up yet. Their veteran batsmen Corey Anderson and Harmeet Singh can play long ball cricket effectively; Anderson has hit two sixes and five fours so far while Singh is currently on four wickets.
Windies’ momentum in this match cannot be ignored and they cannot afford any further losses. Hosts will need a significant effort from their batsmen to remain competitive; specifically Steven Taylor, Andries Gous and Corey Anderson should give an impressive performance.
Roston Chase (wk)
Roston Chase, 28, has long been known as an excellent performer who has captured the imagination since making his West Indies Test debut against India in 2016. From day one he proved his worth, taking five wickets in one innings and scoring a century on debut.
Chase is not only a gifted all-rounder but an exceptional captain as well. He led Australia to victory against England and Pakistan as well as in their lopsided Super Eight win against USA.
West Indies won easily with 10.5 overs to spare thanks to his stellar contribution in setting a reasonable target for them to chase, before he excelled with the bat as they chased it down with ease. He hit an astonishing 82 off only 39 balls as West Indies cruised their way to victory.
Chase delivered an exceptional performance that will undoubtedly remain in the minds of cricket fans worldwide, particularly those following USA cricket.
If the USA team wants to reach the semifinals, they must defeat defending champion South Africa and hope that India loses against West Indies on Sunday. New York and New Jersey cricket fans will hope their team can maintain its impressive win against co-hosts India on Friday.
USA opener Andries Gous has established an excellent start to his innings, putting them in a strong position at halfway mark. But Roston Chase and Andre Russell’s strikes have put West Indies firmly in control.
Windies off-spinner Roston Chase is having an outstanding game here. In successive deliveries he knocks out both Aaron Jones and Corey Anderson before bowling a perfect over to Sherfane Rutherford before being hit for three runs by Andre Russell.
Nosthush Kenjige looks to pull off a short ball from Roston Chase but misses and it sails to mid off for one run, signaling the end of USA innings and shattering American hopes for making semifinals. The loss against Windies dealt an enormous blow.
Andre Russell (wk)
Andre Russell has become one of the most exciting limited-overs cricket players over his two decade long career. A burly lower-order batsman with explosive power at bat, Andre can score quickly while striking hard. Additionally, his great bowling arm and electric fielding have made him a valuable asset to T20 franchises worldwide.
Jamaican-born Russell was raised in an upper middle-class household in Kingston. As a youth he began playing local teams before earning selection to Jamaica’s national side – playing an instrumental role in their triumphant 2011 World Cup run.
After making several impressive cameo appearances, Russell was chosen to play in the 2015 World Cup and provided England’s consolation victory against South Africa during their final group stage game. His performance earned both fans’ applause and his colleagues’ admiration.
Russell scored over 80 runs in each of his first two matches to lead West Indies into the semi-finals and be named Man of the Tournament. His powerful hitting and outstanding fielding led to several big scores – 71 off 29 balls against Australia was his highest T20I score ever!
Russell enjoys an extraordinary family life, regularly sharing pictures of himself and Jassym Lora on social media. Together they are a loving couple, fond of travelling and making new memories together. Jassym is originally from Dominican Republic where she models professionally – she often supports Russell at his games!
USA will rue their poor showing during a three-over period after the powerplay where they fell from 51-1 to 65-4 after Andries Gous and Aaron Jones fell early. Akeal Hosein then wrapped up their innings before Andre Russell attempted to steer his team home through big hitting alone – something he will hope to do on Sunday when Windies play England for semi-final qualification.
