Venues
Many of the 329 Olympic events taking place in Paris will take place near popular tourist spots and iconic venues that have come to symbolize its cityscape, such as Stade de France (for athletics and the opening ceremony) Roland-Garros’ clay courts (with tennis and boxing events) Bercy Arena for basketball games featuring LeBron James and Simone Biles; other locations across France as well as French Polynesia may host events as well.

Stade de France
Stade de France in Saint-Denis is the Olympic venue that serves football, rugby and athletics events at the 2024 Games, having undergone extensive renovations to upgrade lighting, accessibility and electricity networks to comply with Paris’ climate goals.
Stade de France, home to French league 1 side Nice FC and Olympic football matches during both men’s and women’s gold medal matches for football, will welcome track and field events, tennis at Roland-Garros and basketball games at Bercy Arena – in addition to hosting football matches!
This iconic site will also serve as the venue for the Opening Ceremony, with athletes parading across the Seine. Meanwhile, sporting venues will be distributed around the city, making them accessible via foot or metro – and in total most are located within five kilometers of Olympic Village.
Stade de Marseille
Athletes will have access to world-class sporting venues and iconic Paris landmarks for competition, including an opening ceremony along the Seine. Pont Alexandre III bridge was inaugurated at 1900 Exposition Universelle; its magnificent backdrop will provide marathon swimming and road cycling events at Roland Garros Stadium; while Roland Garros stadium hosts both tennis and boxing competitions.
Marseille is known for its love of football, so it makes perfect sense that this city would host Olympic soccer matches at its renowned Stade Velodrome. Additionally, home to Olympique de Marseille since 1947, the venue underwent major refurbishments in 2014 increasing capacity from 60,031 spectators to 67,000.
The Olympic spirit will spread to other cities across France and its overseas territories, including Bordeaux, Nantes, Lyon, Saint-Etienne and Nice as they host multiple football matches; Chateauroux will host shooting competitions while Marseille, with its vast nautical knowledge will host sailing events taking place on the Mediterranean Sea.
Stade de Nice
The Olympics will take place primarily within Paris’ boundaries; however, due to certain sports that cannot take place inside a stadium and require scenic outdoor locations for competition.
Paris Saint-Germain FC’s historic stadium will serve as the host venue for football matches during these Games, in addition to providing space for BMX Freestyle and Skateboarding competitions. Prior to that it hosted both World Cup and European Championship football tournaments.
Other host venues for the Urban Park will include the beautiful Place de la Concorde, which will play an integral role in its operation. Built originally for the 1900 Universal Exposition, it has since served as an important setting for numerous major historical events – from World War I’s conclusion and France’s win at World Cup ’98 to more modern happenings such as Paris Air Shows.
Paris Metro will provide easy access to these venues, while its world-renowned public transportation system should keep spectators moving freely during the Olympics. From beach volleyball set against Eiffel Tower’s backdrop to archery held near Invalides monument there will be plenty of iconic sites worth seeing during their games.
Villepinte Exhibition Centre
Home of Paris Basketball, this 8,000-seat arena is eco-friendly with 80 per cent of its surface covered with greenery and frontage clad with recyclable aluminium panels. During the Games it will host volleyball, handball and table tennis competitions.
At the North Paris Arena (or Exhibition Centre in Seine-Saint-Denis), nine halls will serve as venues for preliminary round boxing matches, fencing events, modern pentathlon competition and sitting volleyball matches at the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Location – the proximity to an international airport makes this city ideal for fans arriving from overseas, while its expansive metro system will transport athletes between venues. Car-travelers can park in one of three dedicated parking areas (P1: 15 spaces; P2: 5; and P3: 16 for PMR (people with reduced mobility). Buses will take visitors close to venues; for convenience RER B has set aside one stop at Paris-Nord Villepinte specifically for these Games while trams also operate within this region.
Montparnasse Tower
Parisians often react negatively to significant architectural changes within their city, like when the Eiffel Tower first appeared – initially disdained as a “tragic street lamp” and an unsightly giant skeleton.
Montparnasse Tower has quickly become one of the city’s iconic landmarks since it opened its doors for business in 1966, due to its stunning views of Paris and prestigious tenants like three French presidents: Francois Mitterrand, Jacques Chirac and Emmanuel Macron. Furthermore, this landmark features a permanent exhibition featuring archive photos of Paris as well as interactive terminals and one of Europe’s highest gastronomic restaurants.
As part of its preparations to host the 2024 Olympic Games, the tower is currently undergoing a significant upgrade designed to modernize its look and improve energy efficiency. Architects competing for this project should emphasize innovation, modernity and technical competency while causing as little disruption as possible to Montparnasse neighborhood residents. New glass covers and improved lighting are just some of the improvements being made; Celine Dion’s incredible performance of Edith Piaf’s L’Hymne a l’amour closed off this ceremony with emotion and talent!
Paris City Hall
The City Hall is decorated in an intricate neo-Renaissance style, boasting numerous statues and turrets. Completely rebuilt between 1874-1882 under architect’s Ballu and Desperthes designs, its massive facade boasts 338 statues of famous Parisians.
Celine Dion brought an emotional crescendo to the ceremony by performing Edith Piaf’s classic ‘Hymne a l’amour’ as she performed it to mark its conclusion and pay homage to one of music’s great artists, Paris, and all that France embodies. It was truly breathtaking performance that celebrated power and emotion of timeless classic, an incredible career of one of music’s great musicians, Paris itself, as well as all it represents.
As soon as the Olympic flame was ignited in its cauldron, Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee and Emmanuel Macron, President of France took to the podium to deliver their speeches and officially open the Olympic Games.
