Punjab Kings 236-5 (Prabhsimran Singh 91 not out) beat Lucknow Super Giants 199-7 (Ayush Badoni 74 not out)
Prabhsimran Singh starred with the bat as Punjab Kings beat Lucknow Super Giants by 37 runs in Match 54 of the Indian Premier League at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala.
The opener hit six fours and seven sixes to complete his fourth half-century of the season and help his side to 236-5. He shared partnerships of 48 with Josh Inglis (30), 78 with captain Shreyas Iyer (45) and 54 with Shashank Singh (33) to guide his team to a commanding lead.
His innings came to an end in Digvesh Rathi’s penultimate over as he attempted a switch-hit and fell short of what would have been his second IPL century.
LSG were never in the hunt in their chase with left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh picking up three wickets inside the powerplay.
He removed Mitchell Marsh, Aiden Markram and Nicholas Pooran to leave the hosts struggling. Azmatullah Omarzai snared Rishabh Pant (18) at point while David Miller (24) was caught by Ayush Badoni at deep backward square leg.
Badoni and Abdul Samad then added 81 for the sixth wicket before the latter was caught at short third by Ravichandran Ashwin in Yuzvendra Chahal’s final over, ending his fine innings with 74 from 40 balls.
With Samad and Badoni holding the crease, a few boundaries were found but that was not enough to prevent a heavy defeat.
In their pursuit of 212, Samad struck two sixes and a four off Prince while Badoni hit another six and a four off Avesh Khan as he helped his side to 199-7 at the end.
The result leaves PBKS second on the table with 15 points from 11 games while LSG are seventh and suffered a blow to their top-four bid.
It was the third defeat in a row for the Super Giants, who have won just once in their last five outings. They will look to bounce back with new captain Rishabh Pant in action when they host RCB on Saturday.
Result
Punjab Kings (PBKS) moved up to second on the table with a comfortable win over LSG. Their batting performance was headlined by Prabhsimran’s 91 not out, who in tandem with Josh Inglish and Shreyas Iyer, took the bowlers to cleaners and helped the team post a huge total of 236-5.
The chase was always going to be a tricky one for LSG and that proved to be the case as they struggled at the start. With the top-three falling cheaply, it was up to Badoni and Samad to keep the run rate going and they managed to do so with some ease.
Despite the well-played innings by Badoni and Samad, the target was too much for the side to cover. With this defeat, the Super Giants fell to seventh and will need a few more wins and a lot of help from other teams to qualify for the playoffs.
The side will now play Delhi Capitals at home in their next game as they look to secure a spot in the top four. Stay tuned for more updates on this match. Follow live score and highlights from this game on ESPNcricinfo.
