Ranji Trophy
The Ranji Trophy is an annual domestic cricket competition organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India. The competition pits the best teams from each state against each other.
Each team is coached and managed by an appointed coach. The winners are awarded the Ranji Trophy and runners-up receive the Imperial Tobacco Trophy. The champions are also rewarded with a monetary prize.
The matches at the league stage of the competition are played on turf. The pitches are inspected by the umpires before the match begins. If the umpires find any irregularities, they can disallow the pitch and may order the team to play on another ground.
The teams are given one chance to appeal against the decision of the umpires, but this is only permitted in exceptional circumstances.
In case a member club has not complied with the rules of the competition, the disciplinary committee will review the incident and decide on appropriate punishment. The disciplinary committee will take into consideration the actions of the club, as well as the nature of the offence. The decision of the disciplinary committee will be final and cannot be challenged by any party.
It is mandatory for all Test cricketers to play in all domestic tournaments conducted by the Board unless there are valid reasons for non-playing. If a player is not available due to national duty or international commitments, the President of the BCCI has the power to grant exemption.
The reason must be certified by the concerned association. The President of the BCCI will only consider the request if it is made before 1st October of the year of the competition.
Each year, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) assigns a rank to each of the member associations, based on their performance in the previous season of the Ranji Trophy. The ranked teams then compete with each other in the knock out stage of the competition, which is played on a home and away basis.
The top two teams in each group will advance to the semifinals, which are played on a five day duration. The winner of each of the semi-finals will go on to play the final, which is also a five day duration. The winner of the championship will be awarded a replica of the trophy.
Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy
The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy is a domestic Twenty20 cricket tournament organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
The tournament features teams from the 38 Indian states. It was introduced in 2006. The tournament is a vital preparatory ground for players aspiring to play in the Indian Premier League and the national team. It encourages aggressive gameplay and provides exposure to young talent.
The tournament has been won by Tamil Nadu a number of times, showcasing the state’s strength in domestic cricket. The team’s depth in talent and strong team management is the reason why it has consistently performed well in this tournament. While other teams like Vidarbha, Punjab, and Jharkhand have made contributions, they are not as consistent in their wins compared to Tamil Nadu.
The 2025-26 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy was the 18th edition of the tournament and was held from 26 November to 18 December 2025. It featured all the 38 teams from the Ranji Trophy, which were divided into four elite groups and one plate group.
