The 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will mark its 10th edition and be hosted jointly by India and Sri Lanka. The competition will include two semifinals and a final, with matches played across eight locations across both hosts countries.
The International Cricket Council used both direct and indirect qualification criteria to select participating teams, which is clearly reflected in the Icc Men’s T20 World Cup Standings. The top four teams from each group earned direct qualification into the Super Eight phase, with rankings determined by points and net run rate.

Super Eight
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is an international cricket competition in Twenty20 format held every other year from 2007 to 2009.
Renamed from World Twenty20 in 2018, this tournament is organized by ICC and features two phases – group stage and Super Eights – where only top two teams from each group progress to Super Eights while the remaining teams are ranked according to net run rate.
India and Sri Lanka, reigning champions and co-hosts respectively, have already qualified for the Super Eights. England are also strong contenders to join them following their win against Italy; however, two spots will be decided upon soon enough.
Australia and New Zealand are in good positions to qualify, though victories in their remaining four matches will be crucial to making it through.
Each has an excellent chance at finishing first in their respective groups; two teams from each will progress directly to Super Eights while four more will remain in Knockout phase play-offs.
Sri Lanka recently restricted Australia to 181. In response, their home team dominated early overs and reached 70/0 during the powerplay; however, they could not maintain momentum; Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head both scored unbeaten half-centuries while Hemantha Chameera led bowling with 3 wickets at 3.37 per over.
At the start of the second over, Pathum Nissanka made an amazing catch to remove Glenn Maxwell, but Australia were unable to capitalize. They struggled in the middle overs and ended up on 178/6 at the end of their innings.
This game was an action-packed thriller and ended in a 24-run victory for England. Sam Curran and Ben Stokes each caught brilliant catches during the last over, helping secure it for them and creating an 80-run partnership between themselves – Curran scoring his fourth wicket and Stokes taking his third.
India edged out Pakistan to keep their chances of winning alive and will need to defeat Namibia and hope the Netherlands don’t surpass them on net run-rate to advance further in the tournament.
Knockout phase
The 2024 T20 World Cup knockout phase has kicked off and a variety of matches remain open to be won. While India and Sri Lanka look set to advance, England, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand have already qualified. Yet two spots in the Super Eights remain up for grabs: teams must finish in the top two in their group stage with positive net run rate to qualify. In turn, winners of each group will then advance directly to Super 8s.
Pakistan’s chances of reaching the Super Eight remain in jeopardy. They must win their final group stage match against Namibia and hope that USA lose to Oman to advance. Should both teams finish on equal number of points, Pakistan and USA would face off in a battle of net run rates – currently, Pakistan boasts a superior net run rate than America but a loss against Namibia could alter this reality.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) recently implemented some changes to the tournament rules in an effort to promote fair play and minimize controversial decisions. They introduced a stop clock feature, and will permit players to review umpire decisions if needed – two welcome additions that should help eliminate future controversies in cricket.
India defeated South Africa by seven runs to claim their second World Cup championship, with Virat Kohli being awarded Player of the Match and Jasprit Bumrah receiving Player of the Tournament honors respectively. Both sides displayed great skills during an intense and entertaining contest that everyone involved should remember fondly.
India ultimately prevailed after some dramatic drama. Virat Kohli had earlier been denied a six off the last ball due to an offside decision, prompting umpires to review this incident and warn Kohli not to commit similar offences in future matches.
The T20 World Cup is being broadcast across the world and featured some of the sport’s most acclaimed commentators, such as former England international and current Test captain Temba Bavuma and 2014 T20 World Cup winner Angelo Mathews, as commentators for 55 T20 World Cup matches being streamed live by BBC Sport app or iPlayer; those without access can still find all the action via BT Sport, Sky Sports and BBC Sport website.
Semi-finals
The 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will take place in Australia and New Zealand five years after its predecessor was cancelled due to COVID-19 pandemic. Four teams from each group will move onto semi-finals; these games will determine who wins the tournament.
Ticket sales for final matches will be calculated based on percentage of capacity with minimum attendance requirements established at each venue; semi-finals and final games will be hosted by Melbourne Cricket Ground and Sydney Cricket Stadium with the latter playing host for final day matches and final.
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is the premier twenty20 international cricket tournament for men. Held every two years by eight top teams from around the world, its winning side receives the Champions Trophy as their prize.
Originally scheduled to be hosted by South Africans in 2018, however due to other cricket events taking place that year (such as 2021 ICC Champions Trophy), its date was postponed until 2021.
At this upcoming event, there will be many thrilling fixtures to look forward to – some notable games being Pakistan vs India, Afghanistan vs Ireland, and Australia vs England. All games will be broadcasted live on Sky Sports so be sure to keep tabs on your schedule and lookout for updates!
