Scorecard

12 points and six wins out of nine matches may not seem cause for alarm, but that’s precisely the problem facing Gujarat Titans (GT), as they head into another crucial match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Friday. A loss would put them further back from top four with two consecutive defeats after their recent streak of four straight victories.

GAD Centre Ground in Ahmedabad will likely host an exciting match as both teams are currently in fine form; GT however have the advantage of playing on home soil; having successfully defended totals over 200 five times already this season at this venue.

SRH have had a good record at this ground with three wins and one no result match so far this season. Their openers have been particularly effective while their batting has struggled. Unfortunately, with both Head and Abhishek leaving in quick succession they appear vulnerable going forward.

GT’s captain Gill has been in great form and will look to lead his side to victory. Klaasen has been one of SRH’s most lethal batsmen this season and hit seven sixes against GT in two innings played against them; Shami has done well too by taking seven wickets at an economy rate of 6.22 against them.

The pitch has looked much improved from what it has in past games here, with only minor dampness underneath providing little in terms of spin. Siraj’s short of length delivery hit Shahrukh Khan on the edge for him to take an excellent catch at long-on; Ajinkya Rahane was next up, bowling an effective deep delivery that holed out to long-on. SRH are struggling for momentum at present while their lower order have struggled against these new bowlers from home side and victory will see them move them up into fourth position with only one match remaining.

Bowling

Gujarat Titans currently lie third on the points table and will look to extend their winning streak when they take on Sunrisers Hyderabad in their next match. Meanwhile, Sunrisers have only managed three victories out of nine contests so far this season.

The game will take place at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Sunrisers Hyderabad have enjoyed strong bowling performance thus far this season and are considered favourites. Venkatesh Iyer, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, and Varun Chakravarthy have been key members of their bowling unit; however they were unable to stop Kolkata Knight Riders scoring 120 in their last match and were bowled out as a result.

On the other hand, GT’s top order has been outstanding in recent innings. Shubman Gill and B Sai Sudharsan combined superbly to put up an 87-run opening stand before Jos Buttler struck back quickly by scoring 37 balls for 64 off 42 deliveries before Jasprit Bumrah chipped in with two wickets to help the hosts set an impressive total of 224 runs.

SRH’s bowling pace attack is a serious cause for concern for any team in any league. Mohit Sharma has been far too inconsistent, while Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad have performed admirably, although neither have managed to find their rhythm as of yet.

The batting side has not been great either, yet has managed to score enough runs to win matches. Their defense has also not been up to par and on several occasions this season they failed to defend big totals successfully. If they want to make the playoffs they must improve all areas. Loss in this match would severely diminish their chances of reaching that milestone while victory would see them jump up 14 points and leave only Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) ahead in points table. In order to secure playoffs position SRH have four more matches left and must play like their top performers from last season in Ahmedabad to achieve success and secure playoffs place!

Batting

Gujarat Titans (GT) have produced some outstanding performances this season with their batting. Shubman Gill has scored 541 runs averaging over 60 at an impressive average of 60, B Sai Sudharsan not too far behind with 497 and Jos Buttler quickly approaching another milestone. Yet their scoring rate of 8.94 per over might concern some but with six wins from nine matches under their belt already, their conservative approach appears to have worked wonders for them.

However, they must step up when the stakes are high; against SRH they must bat much better to stand any chance of victory in this match.

After conceding two early wickets, GT’s batsmen displayed great character to pull things back. Their openers particularly excelled by mixing caution and aggression effectively; Sudharsan missed out on reaching 50 but Gill and Sundar kept scoring steadily for GT. Their partnership gave them an excellent foundation.

Prasidh Krishna has been outstanding with the ball for GT while Mohammed Siraj’s bowling performance against SRH has also been key, taking seven wickets across three matches and providing crucial pace.

He is one of the main factors why SRH have not converted many first-innings totals into victories this season, yet improving their batting is paramount to them competing with teams such as Delhi Daredevils, Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians for a playoff spot. A win against GT is key towards helping SRH realize this objective despite their recent poor form – defeat would put both RCB and MI further ahead and increase the gap between SRH and other sides further – something no team should find themselves facing heading into its final phase!

Fielding

Sunrisers Hyderabad have experienced a dismal start to this year’s IPL season and now aim to turn things around against Gujarat Titans at Narendra Modi Stadium. Gujarat have impressed in early rounds and could present them with a tough opponent; whilst Sunrisers want revenge after losing last match against Mumbai Indians.

The Gujarat Titans have made an excellent start to this season and look set to qualify for playoffs. Their batting has been led by Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill; with exciting foreign players that may prove to be threats.

They will also look to improve their fielding performances. With an average PowerPlay overs run total of over 60, and errors being committed at overaggressively long on and long off positions averaging 60+ runs, the side needs to focus on improving its catching and diving to make fewer errors and make less costly errors in the field.

Early this season, Sunrisers Hyderabad were defeated in their inaugural match by Kolkata Knight Riders despite Heinrich Klaasen’s superb half-century and their effort of chasing down an enormous target but fell short by six wickets. But, with an improved squad this time around and hope of improving in future matches they look poised to bounce back quickly.

As multiple teams vie for one of the four playoff spots, competition for them will be fierce. One key indicator will be how SRH and GT match up: they have met five times already with GT taking an edge by winning three matches against SRH.

Last time these two teams faced off at home, SRH prevailed by 38 runs courtesy of some exceptional shots by both sides – including some spectacular strikes by both batsmen in the final overs – to emerge victorious by 38 runs. Below are a few key highlights from that match.
