England are facing an anxious week if they hope to make it back into the semi-finals, facing Australia in a must-win matchup after losing against Oman in their previous matchup.

Australia were quick off the mark, with Travis Head and David Warner making full use of the Powerplay. Phil Salt and Jos Buttler kept England competitive until Adam Zampa took two wickets consecutively in consecutive overs. In this article, we will discuss about England Cricket Team vs Australian Men’s Cricket Team Match Scorecard.

1. Jos Buttler

Jos Buttler is currently one of the most powerful batsmen in world cricket. His powerful hitting can turn an average team into winners while simultaneously pressurizing any bowling attack. Nasser Hussain once described Buttler as being comparable with greats such as AB de Villiers, MS Dhoni and Viv Richards.

He is a regular in England’s limited-overs side and was promoted to England’s Test side after replacing Craig Kieswetter as wicketkeeper. At 30, the 30-year-old plays for Rajasthan Royals in India Premier League as one of their batsmen – considered one of the finest T20 batsmen around.

His knock of 73 off 54 balls in the final match of the 2021 Champions Trophy was vital to England’s victory against New Zealand, but since then he has found runs hard to come by and faces competition from Bairstow and Foakes for his spot in the team.

2. Dawid Malan

England captain Jos Buttler struck two sixes off Josh Hazlewood to form an excellent opening stand of 56 with Dawid Malan; however, their lower order struggled against Australia’s fast bowlers.

Malan may have come as a shock selection for this tournament, but his experience and maturity with the bat made a decisive impression. While his five previous innings weren’t exactly stellar, they demonstrated his resilience in dealing with pressure of an Ashes series down under.

Last summer, Starc was Yorkshire’s leading Blast run-scorer and has five four-day centuries to his credit. Playing back at Headingley after scoring 404 against Derbyshire back in 2022 in an Ashes draw would put his future with Yorkshire into serious doubt; another big score could place Starc back into attack mode and compromise his long-term prospects there.

3. Jonny Bairstow

Jonny Bairstow spent much of his youth playing rugby and football, trialing with Leeds United Academy. However, in 2012 he decided to follow in his father’s footsteps by turning towards cricket; making his Test debut shortly thereafter. The Yorkshire batsman made his Test debut.

He has scored three One Day International and four Twenty20 International tons, but this was his maiden century in any format of cricket.

England had made significant strides, which seemed assured when Buttler failed to connect with a drive from Zampa that was caught by Josh Hazlewood at deep cover. Still, Buttler continued playing his strokes, reaching fifty off only 122 balls within 39 overs – Moeen Ali soon followed suit by smashing four boundaries down the ground during this innings – both achievements being his two in succession.

4. Dawid Malan

England openers Jos Buttler and Phil Salt got off to a promising start, with Buttler striking a six over long-on and Salt hitting two boundaries off Hazlewood respectively. But in their next over, both batsmen succumbed to poor shots as Australia took full advantage of an open defense.

Pat Cummins and Adam Zampa returned from being rested against Oman to deliver outstanding performances when bowling against England batting, thanks to some disciplined fielding from their players. If these performances repeat against New Zealand on Saturday, Australia could remain top of Group B with four points while any losses will see them slip to third on the table.

5. Dawid Malan

Malan hits out with his bat at a wide delivery and just manages to catch his edge before landing safely with Stokes at wicketkeeper’s end. As they add another single run for England’s 287-run chase. England have finally passed 300 in their pursuit.

England’s top order struggled to score runs but their partnership helped calm nerves. Together they shared a 113-run stand until Buttler was ultimately dismissed in 43rd over.

England captain Joe Root lauded Malan’s performance and suggested he was making an argument to join Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes and Harry Brook in their side. Malan admits it may be hard for him to break in given their presence is so prominent in white-ball cricket – having become a father two weeks ago to two beautiful babies himself! In 21 ODI appearances for England so far he averages an impressive 61 average score, placing him fourth all time among appearance makers behind Buttler Bairstow and Brook.

6. Jos Buttler

Jos Buttler has become one of England’s first global Twenty20 stars and added an exciting new element to their limited-overs batting. Under Morgan’s reign he played an instrumental role in their ODI turnaround; playing an integral part in winning both Champions Trophy and World Cup finals in 2014.

He may not be an enforcer, but his knocks in the final against New Zealand had an immense influence on England’s stunning World Cup triumph. Additionally, he’s an effective wicket-keeper.

Salt drives it straight down the pitch for six, producing an outstanding 106-metre six. He scored five from five attempts.

7. Dawid Malan

Dawid Malan is an aggressive left-hander with power and flair who plays an essential part in England’s limited overs batting plans. Born in Roehampton but raised in South Africa as a child, Dawid first made his first-class debut for Boland Cricket Club during 2005-06.

Malan joined Mitchell Marsh to lead Australia towards an acceptable total, using fielding restrictions and boundaries to push Australia closer towards victory before Glenn Maxwell and Adam Zampa picked up where Malan left off.

Stoinis gives himself the room he needs to hit it through covers for four. Two more from Starc complete his innings.

8. Dawid Malan

Recently, England and Australia faced off in an exciting Ashes series. But on Saturday at The Oval for World Cup 2023 cricket action, those memories will seem long ago.

Malan, of South African Afrikaner descent, made his first-class debut for Middlesex in 2005-06 before moving to Yorkshire the following summer and has become an important member of their limited overs side – scoring eight international centuries across three formats since.

Malan was England’s leading T20 International run-scorer in 2020 and notched two half centuries in the 2021 Ashes series. His impressive showing in T20Is earned him Test recall while helping England claim their inaugural T20 World Cup championship title in 2022.

9. Jonny Bairstow

Jonny Bairstow was born in Bradford on 26 November 1989. As the son of former England wicket-keeper David Bairstow, Jonny made a name for himself in youth cricket by winning the Young Wisden School Cricketer of the Year award in 2007.

As a Yorkshire cricketer, he gained recognition with an England first-class debut in 2012. Since then, his performances have seen him in and out of the squad; but an unbeaten 167 against Sri Lanka last summer cemented his place within it.

England have relied on him as an essential cog in their batting team, playing some superb spin and using short deliveries to score runs off them. His partnership with Phil Salt earlier in the game put them in an advantageous position in their run chase and will look to continue his good form against Australian bowlers like Hazlewood and Zampa in this innings.

10. Dawid Malan

Jos Buttler and Phil Salt provided England with an aggressive start in their chase of 202 at Kensington Oval. However, Adam Zampa and Josh Hazlewood ensured runs were kept to a minimum as Australia kept pace.

Malan attempts to tuck but it goes past fine leg for four. Later he lofts another back-of-a-length ball over midwicket for another couple.
