QB Jacoby Brissett
Jacoby Brissett took charge of the Cardinals in their home matchup against the Cowboys after Dak Prescott went down with an injury, and led his team to victory that kept their playoff hopes alive. Brissett impressed Dallas defensive players with his skillful maneuvers while leading them towards a victory that kept their playoff dreams alive.
Cowboys offensive struggled early. Their opening drive stalled out in the red zone before culminating in a fourth-and-goal attempt that ultimately failed. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer elected to go for it and Prescott was later sacked for 7 yards loss as a result of this decision.
As soon as the game moved into the second quarter, things only got worse for Dallas. They were forced to punt on their initial possession and Arizona took over almost immediately with its offense, working down to Dallas 46-yard line. Soon thereafter, Brissett connected three times for 31 yards before connecting on a 4-yard touchdown pass that put Arizona up 14-0.
On their next possession, Dallas had a brief moment of hope when Sam Williams blocked a punt and it rolled all the way back into the end zone for a touchdown return by Marshawn Kneeland – marking their first blocked punt return touchdown since 2021!
Cowboys failed to gain any momentum on their next two possessions, with Brandon Aubrey’s 26-yard field goal serving as their sole score in the third quarter. It came following an exhausting drive that saw Prescott try and reach into the red zone before his pass to Lamb was picked off by Marshawn Kneeland and turned into an interception.
RB Trey McBride
Cowboys’ opening drive looked promising until it reached Arizona 7-yard line and Dak Prescott was sacked on fourth down by Josh Sweat – one of five sacks by Arizona Cardinals’ defense on him; Calais Campbell added two in his 250th regular season game.
Arizona took control in the second quarter, outscoring Dallas 31-3 thanks to two touchdown drives led by Jacoby Brissett and Marvin Harrison – with another 12-yard score passed on to Trey McBride from Michael Wilson’s 50-yard reception set-up for another Arizona score.
Cowboys fans were expecting another long night on their opening possession in the second half, reaching Arizona 3-yard line before having to settle for a 26-yard field goal. On fourth down and goal at 1-yard line Brian Schottenheimer made an unconventional call – going for it instead of taking safe points instead – which proved costly as Prescott was sacked and lost one yard.
Arizona quickly turned this game into a shootout in the fourth quarter, scoring 17 unanswered points to edge out Dallas Cowboys on their home field and extend their winless streak to five games. Sam Williams blocked punt and fumble recovery was in vain as Arizona scored the last few. Dallas were unable to capitalize on Sam Williams’ blocked punt/fumble recovery as Arizona scored its final 17 points of the game, ending it 3-5 and with no wins this season.
WR Michael Wilson
Arizona began the season 2-0 and suffered five consecutive 13-point losses before stopping their slide Monday night against Dallas Cowboys by taking drastic measures that denied them any chance at coming back into contention – stripping Javonte Williams of the ball and intercepting Dak Prescott for interceptions that kept Arizona at bay and set up backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett to lead Arizona to 340 yards of offense with two touchdown passes from Jacoby Brissett’s direction. It was an outstanding team effort with Jacoby Brissett making an excellent case for his QB1 candidate status while leading Arizona over its rivals to victory by making sure no comeback was possible against Dak Prescott-led Cowboys on Monday.
Though not an easy win, Dallas did find success. On their opening possession against Arizona, Dallas advanced all the way to their 7-yard line on fourth down but could not convert when faced with fourth and goal. When Brian Schottenheimer went for it anyways on fifth down Prescott was taken down, sealing Dallas’ fate and sending the game into overtime.
The Cowboys defense struggled, failing to convert two third downs and allowing two long touchdown drives either side of halftime. A late drive featuring three fourth downs would have resulted in another loss had first-round rookie defensive tackle Walter Nolen not recorded his first ever sack.
Cowboys struggles can be traced to several sources. One key reason was the ineffective running game. Both Emari Demercado and Bam Knight suffered injuries this season and could not gain significant rushing yardage on the ground. Furthermore, their defense struggled against Arizona Cardinals pass rush. Their inability to consistently pressure opposing quarterbacks proved especially evident against Arizona’s aggressive front seven; as evidenced by only three sacks allowed so far this season and eight overall this year.
TE CeeDee Lamb
Dak Prescott managed to locate his favorite target multiple times despite being sacked four times on Monday night – Dallas Cowboys wideout Jeremy Lamb. Lamb caught a 33-yard pass from Prescott during Dallas’ initial drive of the second quarter and later scored on a 1-yard reception from Prescott. That marked Lamb’s fourth straight game with at least one catch and led Dallas with 85 receiving yards for the game.
Dallas started the next series off strong as Prescott led his offense on an impressive drive of 78 yards in seven plays, but was forced to settle for a 26-yard field goal due to a failed fourth and goal attempt at Arizona 2-yard line. Three points would later be scored when Prescott found Lamb for a 31-yard gain on third down.
Lamb would make another play that made headlines during the next series, catching an incredible pass over cornerback Patrick Peterson to score a 58-yard touchdown pass – marking his fourth play of 30+ yards this season and giving him third place among all NFL quarterbacks in that regard.
As the game entered its fourth and final quarter, Lamb again had an opportunity to lead his Cowboys back. On fourth-and-3 from Arizona 3-yard line, however, they failed to convert and instead turned it over on downs.
Lamb and wideout George Pickens are expected to re-sign with the Cowboys in the offseason, after both agreed on contract restructures on Wednesday that freed up some cap space. Lamb even converted future guarantees into signing bonuses to remain with Dallas through 2028.
RB Marshawn Kneeland
Dallas Cowboys players were shocked to hear news of Marshawn Kneeland’s tragic death from a gunshot wound hours before kickoff of their last game of the season against Arizona on Monday night; just hours prior, Kneeland scored his first career touchdown when he recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for a score. He had just started his second year with Dallas.
Kneeland provided much-needed momentum early for the defense. He was all over the field during the first quarter, including a strip sack on Brissett and two tackles for loss, along with six quarterback pressures. Kneeland had also contributed six pass breakups and six pass pressures.
On the other side of the ball, Dak Prescott struggled to establish any sort of consistency on offense. While he made several impressive runs, his passes often went wide or were otherwise off target and failed to lead them into the end zone.
Dallas had no chance in the fourth quarter, though. Dallas head coach Brian Schottenheimer decided not to punt, opting for Prescott instead and going for it on fourth down from 4-yard line, only for this to fail with him getting sacked and losing possession.
On their next drive, the Cardinals made use of good field position to set up a short field goal and Sam Williams managed to outrace three defenders and fall on it for a safety, effectively ending any chance for Cowboys comeback despite scoring three more points via 26-yard field goal; ultimately losing 27-17.
