Jharkhand players were beaming with pride as they proudly posed for a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy final photocall, with Kumar Kushagra and Ishan Kishan serving as key contributors in their team’s triumph; Ishan was named tournament’s highest run-scorer.
Not many gave the Jharkhand Cricket Team a chance, as they had never made it to the top of any domestic tournament before.

Ishan Kishan
Ishan Kishan stood proud on the pitch in Ranchi and basked in the cheers from Jharkhand supporters. Just days earlier in Pune, his team had triumphed against Haryana to capture their maiden title of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and signifying their ascent in cricket in Jharkhand.
Kishan was filled with joy, often breaking into tears of excitement at his success as the face of Jharkhand and its success story. His infectious enthusiasm was palpable – an embodiment of their dreams; an emerging talent who quickly made their mark on national stages like MS Dhoni (who hails from this newly created state).
Kishan has made an immediate impact since becoming Jharkhand captain, leading his side to an amazing SMAT campaign despite facing tough opposition in Round 1.
They finished fourth overall, dropping only one game during that round and qualifying easily for the final against Gujarat, setting an incredible total score of 262 before easily overthrowing it with little difficulty.
Kishan Singh earned an invitation to India’s T20 squad against England with little surprise. Not only is he currently leading run-scorer in the Indian Premier League – having made five consecutive tons in this edition – he has established himself as an elite performer who will likely continue racking up runs and impressing selectors with his superb performances.
Kumar Kushagra
Kumar Kushagra is an emerging young cricketer from Jharkhand. A wicket-keeper batsman, his talent and dedication are helping him rise through the ranks to become one of the finest prospects of Jharkhand domestic cricket.
Kumar Kushagra has proven to be a match-winner across both T20 and first-class cricket since making his debut in 2021-22, quickly rising through the ranks to earn himself an IPL contract with Gujarat Titans in 2024 – where his impressive batting performance led them to retain him for 2025 season!
Success of Jharkhand cricket team has been an incredible boost to the state. It has given hope and renewed interest in cricket in Jharkhand; this will be exciting to witness at future tournaments!
Ishan Kishan and Kumar Kushagra are two of the state’s most promising players, known for leading their teams to victory during key matches. JSCA has placed their faith in these youngsters and hopes they continue their winning streak over time.
Ratan Kumar was previously head coach for India Under-23 side that lost to Bengal in quarterfinals of CK Nayudu Trophy last year, so has brought some much-needed freshness into their ranks and given them confidence.
Their players are determined to prove naysayers wrong and win Vijay Hazare Trophy this season; though it will prove challenging for young players but are more than capable of succeeding!
Anukul Roy
Anukul Roy had been playing age-group cricket in Jharkhand before making his India Under-19s debut, before his big break came at the 2018 Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand where he finished joint top wicket-taker of that campaign – an achievement which would prove pivotal to taking his cricketing career forward to new levels. An impressive performance like Anukul Roy’s could prove transformative.
After his performance at this tournament, he made his list A debut for his state in the 2017-18 Vijay Hazare Trophy and continued to make steady improvements every season at domestic level. His left-arm spin can trouble batsmen while he knows how to score runs lower down the order; these three-dimensional skills make him an attractive prospect at professional level as an all-rounder in future.
Mumbai Indians signed him prior to the 2019 IPL season and he quickly made the most of the limited opportunities he was given, learning much from experienced players along the way. Soon thereafter he transferred to Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of 2022 season and has taken full advantage of them and had more consistent playing opportunities since.
Anukul has proven his worth for KKR and remains an essential member of their squad. His ability to bowl economically while adding depth with bat keeps him relevant in an intense KKR setup.
Anukul is looking forward to seizing this opportunity and becoming a regular player in their playing XI, thanks to his versatility in both batting and bowling – as his ability can translate promise into sustained impact on the big stage.
Young Saraikela Kharsawan cricketer Aakash Bhogle is in his prime years and should excel consistently in domestic tournaments and franchise leagues to be considered for higher honors, such as India A or senior national consideration.
Over time he may become one of many promising youngsters who go on to become successful all-rounders on international cricket scene.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi would ride his bicycle almost 100 kilometres each month from Tajpur to Patna in the searing summer heat in order to collect entry forms for an inter-school cricket tournament he was obsessed with as a child – his obsession nearly reaching maniacal proportions! Now, however, his chance is here for him to prove he can compete against some of the very best cricket players around the globe.
Vaibhav has long been touted as an exceptional batsman, yet has also shown himself to be an exceptional bowler. On Tuesday – in spite of only scoring 8 runs – in the Duleep Trophy quarterfinal against North East Zone in Dubai he took two wickets for 68 runs against them while making them look ordinary despite scoring two wickets himself!
Kishan Sooryavanshi’s appointment as Kishan’s vice-captain caused some debate, as many questioned his selection given his age and limited first-class experience. Nonetheless, selectors defended this move by emphasizing its long-term development potential rather than meeting immediate team needs.
Kishan was injured keeping wickets against South Zone and Sooryavanshi was asked to assume his captaincy for the remainder of the match, being both top order batsman and captain at once.
Determined to make his mark as leader, Sooryavanshi took full advantage of this unique opportunity by excelling as captain and taking charge. He made no attempt at dodging responsibility or let any opportunities pass him by!
His coaches had come to expect this sort of maturity from him, taking responsibility for what went wrong and devising ways to course-correct. It’s a pattern evident elsewhere too; such as his mischievous nature and sweet tooth which have needed monitoring while simultaneously maturing his game.
Manish Ojha hopes Sooryavanshi can use their familiarity with the Chennai pitch to their advantage in Sunday’s Duleep Trophy final in Chennai. Ojha has been impressed with Sooryavanshi’s level of maturity thus far and believes he will mature into a “complete player.” His development could also add to the growing pool of young talent associated with the Jharkhand Cricket Team.
