Sri Lankan national cricket team is the national cricket team for Sri Lanka. A member of the International Cricket Council (ICC), they compete in all major world cricket tournaments since being formed in 1975 and receiving Test cricket status in 1981. Since then they have won several international titles as well as frequently appearing as finalist teams at World Cup tournaments.

The team’s best year was 1996, when they reached the World Cup final and won the ICC Champions Trophy. Unfortunately, after these achievements they struggled to maintain their form: poor 50-over World Cup performances followed by Sangakkara and Jayawardene’s retirement created an opening.

Since then they have been rebuilding themselves; nevertheless they occasionally produce exceptional performances like winning series in South Africa in 2019 as an example of such.

Sri Lanka competed in the eighth Asia Cup tournament held in Lahore, Pakistan under Imran Khan as coach and with an entirely new squad, including many young players making their international debuts for the first time.

Captain Arjuna Ranatunga won the toss and decided to field first against Australia who made an explosive start but then suffered as Sri Lankan spin attack took its toll; from 5-170 they tumbled rapidly downhill before succumbing at 8-170 against them.

Sri Lanka was on track to make a comeback when Mark Chapman scored an 81 run innings at nearly one run per ball rate, yet fell during the 40th over with an apparent groin strain while running between wickets and was sent off for treatment.

Thirimanne and Dilshan led Sri Lanka to an easy 229-run victory, scoring centuries and helping their team become the first team ever to successfully chase down an ODI match total in history.

Through this success, Sri Lanka qualified for the semi-finals of the World Cup where they would go on to become champions – becoming the first non-Test playing nation to do so.

Scorecard

The Sri Lankan national cricket team represents the island nation of Sri Lanka in international cricket. The team competes in all three forms of the game, Test matches, one day internationals (ODI), and twenty20 internationals.

The team has won a number of tournaments, including two World Cup titles, in 1996 and 2014. The team is led by Kumar Sangakkara.

The team first played internationally in 1975, when it was granted Test status. Over the years, the team has gained a reputation for producing some of the best players in the world.

Its best achievement was winning the World Cup in 1996, defeating Australia in the final. The team has also won several other international tournaments. The team is currently ranked sixth in the world in Tests, and eighth in both ODI and T20.

New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming won the toss and elected to bat first. Sri Lanka’s opening batsman, Marvan Atapattu, and skipper Jayasuriya dominated the Blackcaps bowling attack. However, they struggled to maintain their run rate in the second innings.

New Zealand lost three wickets in the first five overs, and fell to 176/6. New Zealand’s top scorer, Mark Chapman, made 81 from 31 balls. However, he was injured while running between wickets and was eventually ruled out of the match with what appeared to be a groin or hip injury.

The Sri Lankan innings began slowly, but soon the openers, Tharanga and Dilshan, started punishing the England bowlers. However, in the 19th over, Tharanga was caught behind by Dhoni off Zaheer Khan. Sangakkara then joined the party and scored 117 off just 86 balls to help his team reach their target with more than ten overs to spare.

This was his second century of the match, and he was named man of the match. The team won the third ODI by 140 runs and claimed a 2-1 lead in the series. Eshan Fernando took 3-26 and Maheesh Theekshana 3-35 to help Sri Lanka to victory. The win gave the team some much-needed confidence ahead of their next tournament in June, where they will host Pakistan.

Final Words

One can only feel sorrow for a nation that boasts such an extensive cricket heritage and tradition, yet has endured civil war and other tragedies to build its identity.

Sangakkara often mentions how Murali made numerous phone calls to borrow lorries to transport relief aid into eastern areas when necessary; occasionally clashing with politicians when necessary when help wasn’t reaching where needed;

Gamini Dissanayake won over Britain’s most critical administrators with an eloquent pitch for Sri Lanka to receive Test status; unfortunately he would not live to witness Arjuna Ranatunga lift the World Cup two years later, marking that Sri Lanka had arrived as truly.
