Bangladesh vs South Africa 2nd Test 2024
South Africa defeated Bangladesh by an innings and 273 runs to seal an emphatic 2-0 series win in the second Test at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium. Led by seamer Kagiso Rabada’s five-wicket haul in the opening innings – giving South Africa an immense lead – South African bowlers executed an expert follow-on and dismissed Bangladesh for just 143.
South African opener Tony de Zorzi and Tristan Stubbs both scored maiden centuries to put South Africa in complete control on day one despite Aiden Markram suffering a leg injury and leaving with plenty of time remaining on his innings. South Africa finished day one at 307/2 with plenty of runs still available for scoring.
On day two, South Africa continued their dominance of the contest and wrapped it up within three days. Wiaan Mulder became South Africa’s second century-maker while contributing 152 runs with left-arm spinner Senuran Muthusamy to break de Zorzi and Stubbs’ seventh wicket stand of 109 on day 1.
Muthusamy and Maharaj then made short work of Bangladesh batting order as they reduced them to just 143 in their second innings, with Muthusamy recording an incredible 12-57 haul, followed by Keshav Maharaj’s five-wicket haul as India completed an emphatic win on an easy pitch.
Faf du Plessis of South Africa was thrilled with his team’s performance against India and said it demonstrated their versatility on any surface. Du Plessis noted how their plan to attack batsmen proved fruitful; the South African captain added that his side are looking forward to their matchup against Abu Dhabi on Thursday.
Day 1
South Africa was dominant on Day One of their Test match against Bangladesh, winning by an overwhelming margin. Both Tony de Zorzi and Tristan Stubbs hit half-centuries to put Bangladesh on the back foot before winning the toss and seizing control with some impressive bowling performances from their bowlers.
South Africa made their comeback to international cricket after two decades, in 1991. Although they did not win any major ICC tournament until the 1998 Champions Trophy, South Africa quickly established itself as one of the best white-ball sides worldwide. They have reached five ODI World Cup semi-finals and two T20 World Cup finals; but have not had success winning either competition yet.
Aiden Markram has led South Africa since 2017. Under his watchful leadership, they boast a robust squad with experienced veterans and exciting young prospects alike. Most recently they made the 2018 ICC World Cup semi-final before losing to India under controversial circumstances.
South Africa will look to win their second World Cup trophy when they take on Pakistan in the final in March 2022. They are one of the strongest Test cricket sides and currently ranked three on ICC rankings; Kagiso Rabada, Wiaan Mulder and Keshav Maharaj make up their fast bowling attack that stands them in good stead for victory.
Bangladesh were put in after losing the toss and being put in. Their opening essay only yielded 106 runs before they were dismissed by South African bowling attack – Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam all fell quickly leaving them vulnerable at 108/6.
Mominul Haque and Jaker Ali managed to put together an innings-saving stand of 97 before Mominul was trapped lbw by Dane Piedt post lunch session and forced out for only 202. This left their home team reeling with only 13 balls remaining to reach victory.
Day 2
South Africa’s bowlers were in fine form on Day Two, effectively exerting pressure on Bangladesh batting. South African bowlers claimed 16 wickets on Day Two alone – including five-fors from Kagiso Rabada and Keshav Maharaj respectively, and Taijul Islam also contributed with his fifth scalp of the match.
Mehidy Hasan and Jaker Ali came together for an impressive 138-run partnership before bad light and rain prevented South Africa from using its second new ball.
Last session saw both batsmen show signs of fatigue as both teams earned late runs before heading into tomorrow’s final day in Chattogram.
Aiden Markram continued his stellar form with the bat, scoring his maiden century of the Test series. He was well supported by Tony de Zorzi who scored an unbeaten hundred, as well as Ryan Rickelton who made an important thirty.
Bangladesh had an uneven start to their day as they struggled with shot selection on an unhelpful surface. Their openers couldn’t find suitable lengths for driving shots while their middle order also struggled with bat and ball.
Litton Das was one of several batsmen to succumb early. Litton edged Kagiso Rabada’s fuller delivery to slip for seven, and Hasan Mahmud was caught at second slip by De Villiers off Kagiso Rabada for ten. Rashid Khan and Zakir Hasan’s wickets dealt another blow to their hosts who finished their first innings with only two boundaries in total.
At Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram, the visitors exhibited a clinical performance to record an emphatic victory by an innings and 273 runs at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium – their largest win in Asia since 2008 and propelling them to fourth position in Test Championship table. Now they will enter into their home series against India with confidence.
Day 3
South Africa managed to recover after an initially disappointing start and finish day two at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium with 283 for 7. Kyle Verreynne and Wiaan Mulder both scored half centuries to help South Africa take control of the match while Jaker Ali Anik hit his maiden fifty for Bangladesh but unfortunately they lost three wickets before adding much else.
After an extended rain break, play resumed quickly in the first session with Kagiso Rabada making full use of wet ball conditions by picking up two early wickets against Bangladesh batsmen Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Mominul Haque put up resistance with unbeaten stands of 77 and 59 respectively; eventually their resistance came to an end when Jaker Ali Anik fell lbw after scoring his maiden Test fifty to Keshav Maharaj lbw.
South Africa continued their momentum, reaching 303 for 3 in their third innings and then enforced the follow-on with an advantage of over 400 runs at day’s end. Once more, spinners played an essential role in breaking through Bangladesh’s resistance, taking four wickets between them.
Rain stalled the morning session’s progress until shortly before lunch when it cleared away completely, giving Mehidy Hasan Miraz and debutant Jaker Ali Anik the opportunity to form an effective partnership for Bangladesh resulting in both batsmen completing half-centuries while providing an 81 run lead at day’s end.
But they were overwhelmed by South Africa’s second new ball and were bowled out for just 143 in the post-lunch session, with Mominul Haque falling as the last wicket to Senuran Muthusamy trapping him lbw for Senuran Muthusamy to give South African victory and take an early 1-0 advantage in series. The second and final Test begins Tuesday at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram.
