Pakistan are one of the premier teams in both Tests and ODIs, having recently defeated Sri Lanka 3-0, but remain inconsistent over longer formats.
Their results have varied widely between tournaments with two early World Cup exits followed by 2009 T20 World Cup glory and 2017 Champions Trophy victory over arch-rival India; regardless of this instability they remain one of international cricket’s most exciting and unpredictable sides.
Pakistan will tour New Zealand from December-January in 2023 with two Test matches and three ODIs scheduled, starting December 4th through January 7th at multiple venues throughout Karachi and Multan. It will mark their first bilateral series meeting since 2008 – when Pakistan won 3-1 against New Zealand.
Pakistan and New Zealand have competed against each other 21 times in Twenty20 cricket, with Pakistan winning 13 and losing just four times since first meeting during a semi-final at 2007 World Twenty20 – Pakistan ultimately prevailed 13-7!
Pakistan’s hopes for an unlikely turnaround on their tour to New Zealand were given new life by an astonishing win in the third game of their five-match T20 series on Thursday, reducing New Zealand’s lead in the series by two matches to two and reinvigorating faith in Pakistani ability to compete on an international platform.
Hasan Nawaz, 23, proved worthy of Pakistan’s trust when they opted to drop veteran batsman Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam from their T20 side during the third match in Auckland by scoring an unbeaten century which propelled Pakistan to an incredible score of 207-1 against New Zealand’s 204-9.
As the ICC T20 World Cup gets underway in October, both teams will aim to improve their form ahead of it. Pakistan were in control for most of the first ODI. Thanks to an outstanding partnership between Mark Chapman and Mohammad Abbas – making 344/3. However, after suffering seven wickets for only 22 runs they succumbed.
Pakistan won the second ODI after an evenly-contested encounter, winning by eight wickets despite both sides showing great fighting spirit.
