The History of the Rivalry
Bangladesh and Sri Lanka share one of the fiercest rivalries in international cricket, having competed against each other at numerous ICC tournaments over time, often with matches becoming highly contentious. This year has seen their rivalry intensify further as Bangladesh have taken to pushing Sri Lanka close in multiple matches, even coming close to overtaking them in limited-overs rankings. Partly due to Bangladesh’s improved team but also because Sri Lanka feels betrayed by South Asian neighbours who appear more focused than them at international cricket.
Both sides have accepted the challenge and are engaging in heated exchanges. Sri Lanka coach Chris Silverwood has asked his side to focus on the series instead of allowing previous tensions to affect play; yet it remains evident that this encounter between two fierce competitors will be highly charged and intense.

Hasaranga’s success proved especially gratifying considering he had been absent from international play for some time.
The Players
Sri Lanka will look to bounce back after their defeat at New York when they face Bangladesh at Shere Bangla National Stadium. Bangladesh have lost three consecutive matches and risk further dropping behind, making this game crucially important to both teams involved.
Teams on either side are generally evenly matched when it comes to talent, boasting both experienced players and promising youngster. The Bangladesh Cricket Board
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) serves as the national governing body of cricket in Bangladesh, responsible for selecting and managing their national cricket team known as Bangla Tigers as well as all domestic cricket in Dhaka, its capital city. Composed of nine directors–three being MPs while two others being relatives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina–the BCB also oversees all domestic cricket across Bangladesh. Recently, the board has come under intense strain due to widespread protests across Bangladesh in recent weeks that ultimately culminated with Sheikh Hasina announcing her resignation and sparking a political crisis that has rocked the nation – disrupting numerous activities including training of the national cricket team.
Sheikh Hasina’s government has been accused of censorship, while some members of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) possess political connections. For example, Nazmul Hasan, its Chief Executive is also an Awami League MP; Shafiul Alam Chowdhury became an Awami League MP early 2024 as well.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has also found itself embroiled in controversy surrounding the Bangladesh Premier League. A number of players were accused of match-fixing, prompting them to take legal action against various teams involved. As a result of these allegations, legal proceedings against several of them had to be initiated; furthermore, BCB pledged that any instances of match-fixing would be dealt with swiftly and firmly.
