Rishad Hossain took two quick wickets early, yet Australia managed to retake control of their innings under Glenn Maxwell and David Warner’s guidance. Their timely hitting gave Australia an excellent start.
Once again, rain stalled play, but players were thankful to have enjoyed an outstanding start to their innings with a lead of more than 40 runs when play resumed.
After winning the toss, Australia sent Bangladesh into bat first and managed to restrict their bowlers’ efforts to an average total. Unfortunately for Bangladesh batsmen however, they could not capitalize on this opportunity and quickly came under pressure; then Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh’s wickets helped derail their innings even further before with two overs remaining Australian batsmen took control with Powerplay to put themselves into an advantageous position.
Travis Head
Travis Head is one of Australia’s brightest young cricketers, making a mark as an impressive white-ball batsman in the KFC T20 Big Bash League and as youngest captain for Southern Redbacks in KFC T20 Big Bash League. Due to this impressive form, Travis was included as opener in Australia’s World Cup squad of 2023 as he looks to make an impressionful mark for tournament host nation Australia.
Aaron Finch’s retirement left an opening at the top of the order that Head took advantage of, producing some strong performances to earn himself selection for both ODIs and Tests. Although at times his longer formats performance has faltered, Head has maintained his status as a regular member of Australian squad across formats.
Head was in superb form during their T20 World Cup opener against Bangladesh, hitting an emphatic fifty within seven overs and being involved in an exhilarating run chase that propelled his side to an emphatic win.
Head and David Warner made an excellent start, taking Australia’s score to 59/0 during the powerplay. Bangladesh responded well; Rishad Hossain took two wickets, yet Australia were comfortably ahead by the time rain intervened for a second time.
Head once more displayed his skill with the bat as he struck Mustafizur Rahman for an incredible six to give Australia an early lead. Soon afterwards Maxwell joined him at the crease, creating an excellent partnership that yielded 86 runs in eight overs with them both contributing runs as they guided Australia to an emphatic win against Bangladesh – giving their Super 8 campaign an excellent start and pushing them ahead of India on net run rate in Group 1. Australia began their World Cup defense off to an excellent start!
Glenn Maxwell
Glenn Maxwell has quickly established himself as one of the most entertaining all-rounders to watch on the international scene, thanks to his talent as an all-rounder who can hit big sixes in limited-overs cricket and his unique batting abilities combining fearsome shot-making ability with solid batting abilities. Furthermore, his off-the-cuff improvisations often lead to some truly unforgettable moments!
Maxwell burst onto the scene with his debut in 2010 and quickly won over fans due to his dramatic shot-making in domestic one-day cricket. He became one of only a handful of Australians ever to score 50 off 19 balls at Ryobi Cup; and went on to outwit India and South Africa alike in Emerging Players Tournament with fearless hitting in 2011.
He quickly established himself as a key member of Australia’s white-ball squad, playing an instrumental role in their 2021 and 2022 T20 World Cup triumphs. Unfortunately, however, he was dropped from Australia’s Test side in 2018, but his unbeaten 145-ball 62 against Sri Lanka helped restore him back into their ODI side.
Maxwell played an essential part of Australia’s chase against Bangladesh, contributing to their powerful Powerplay and taking them from 46/0 after 12 overs to 59/0 after just 12. While Bangladesh attempted to slow Australia down with promotions for Rishad Hossain and dismissals of Head and Mitchell Marsh; Maxwell kept his cool, taking away the wind out of their sails until rain arrived – by which point Australia were well ahead of DLS par score and had won their match-up!
Australia will be without Aaron Finch during their upcoming series against Bangladesh, but are expected to field a strong lineup which includes pace bowlers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood who were rested for Scotland but could return for one of three matches on Antigua; both players would replace Nathan Ellis and Ashton Agar who have both been sidelined due to injuries.
Pat Cummins
Cummins made an immediate impression in Australian domestic cricket. He took 3-29 against New South Wales during a Big Bash match during 2010-11 season and was soon after offered a central contract by Cricket Australia, becoming their youngest ever signing at that point. Although this win doesn’t guarantee anything yet, Australia showed impressive resilience after being battered in both Test and ODI series against India.
