England’s defence of their T20 World Cup crown has encountered an unexpected setback. After setting themselves a daunting target of 109 on a difficult pitch in Barbados, rain interrupted play after only six overs had been completed and forced rainout.
Scotland took advantage of England errors and poor bowling to move ahead by 39 runs after the Powerplay was concluded, led by George Munsey and Michael Jones who both remain unbeaten for their associate nation. In this article, we will discuss the main points of Scotland National Cricket Team Vs England Cricket Team Match Scorecard.
England 109 (Michael Jones 45 not out
Michael Jones and George Munsey combined for an outstanding 41-ball unbeaten stand to put Scotland in a commanding position before rain interrupted play at Kensington Oval in Barbados. After 10 overs they took Scotland to 90 without loss for no loss and set England a revised target of 109 in 10 overs; but due to further downpouring the match was eventually called off before Jos Buttler could even start their innings response on its opening day in Barbados.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood bowled superbly early on to hold back Scotland, but one costly over from Adil Rashid later put them in difficulty. Jones batted superbly slamming two sixes and four fours to move quickly from 30 balls to 45 off 30; Munsey scored 41 off 31 deliveries.
Unfortunately, the umpires have made the unfortunate decision to reinstate covers and thus cause a substantial delay in this T20 World Cup match, which appeared promising at first.
As soon as play finally started, both teams struggled to gain any momentum on an unevenly bounced pitch. England were particularly untidy with their bat but managed to reach 50 without loss in just over 6 overs – something most hadn’t predicted!
Michael Jones starts Scotland off strong by smashing four runs off the first ball he faces, driving it towards long on off. Later in Jordan’s over he repeats this action for four runs more as Scotland put up a substantial total on the board.
Munsey was then hit out of his own ground by Jordan with an off-spinner who delivered short and swiftly, sending Munsey reeling. Jones attempted to hit back by turning his bat but completely missed it – an outrageous failure!
Scotland close on an impressive total of 90 in their final over. Rashid takes care to contain runs rather than secure dismissals as the dot ball dominates this over.
George Munsey 41 not out
George Munsey and Michael Jones led Scotland to a thrilling score of 90 without loss against England at Saint Lucia’s Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, before heavy rain forced an interruption during an innings break, leaving England needing to chase a revised target of 109 over 10 overs.
Jos Buttler had an early miscue when he edged a ball from Mark Wood to third man, only for him to rebound quickly and hit three sixes off 48 balls before the rain stopped play. Before then he had already scored two sixes in one over before it ended prematurely.
Munsey was another stand-out performer, striking five sixes and two fours in an explosive 61-ball innings. Having previously impressed Durham during their County T20 tournament campaign, Munsey now has amassed an impressive total of 89 runs from just 14 innings played so far in this tournament.
He shared an unbroken second-wicket stand with Jones, who looked set to score his maiden fifty in this tournament – he had reached 40 when play was called off; they had added 39 off 22 balls as both hit leg-spinner Adil Rashid (0-26) for huge sixes.
After losing their initial match in Group B, the defending champions needed to chase a revised target of 109 off 10 overs after rain stopped play prematurely. Each team left with one point after their opening Group B games.
Both teams will look to build momentum ahead of their upcoming matches; England take on Namibia while Scotland face Australia; boosted by fast bowler Jofra Archer’s return from injury, Australia should expect an upswing. Scotland hopes to repeat their heroics of beating them with two balls remaining during 2018 World Cup tournament matchup.
Adil Rashid 3-18)
Rain kept falling intermittently in this match that featured stop-start overs. Scotland were led by George Munsey and Michael Jones to score 109 without loss in 16 overs despite constant rain showers; but Jos Buttler’s men found it hard to chase that total due to Travis Head and Marcus Stoinis making blistering fifties for Australia during their chase attempt.
Australia captain Aaron Marsh won the toss and elected to bowl first, taking two wickets within his first over with Glenn Maxwell being edged behind to Safyar Sharif for 35 runs in quick time as Australia fell quickly to 34-2 within just 15 overs of bowling.
Munsey and Jones shared in an 83 off 42 ball partnership as Scotland reached 51-0 after 6.2 overs before rain again interrupted play. When play resumed, Jones dispatched Adil Rashid’s first delivery over long-off for six and followed it up with an astounding slog sweep that struck Kensington Oval roof to put Scotland firmly in charge at 96-1 after nine overs.
But Rashid struck back in his fourth over to shatter their hopes. Usman Qadir attempted to get off strike by pushing back at Moeen Ali but Moeen took an outstanding catch from Moeen. Rashid then claimed his third wicket when Ben Stokes tried for the boundary off a leg spinner but only found a rope, caught at short midwicket by Tom Curran and out.
Rashid returned for one final over and claimed his fifth wicket when Haris Rauf was bowled by Wood’s extra pace, who managed to get past Haris’ gloves and beat his outside edge. Shortly afterwards he removed Usman Amir’s middle stump with an impeccable delivery that flew past Usman Amir’s hands before hitting timber – leaving Pakistan’s batsman out lbw for 79 runs.
Jofra Archer received a standing ovation by Kensington Oval crowd after making his T20 World Cup debut for England at Kensington Oval – however he was hit for 17 runs in two overs before Chris Jordan, also from England but born in Barbados, conceded 18 runs over two overs before play was eventually stopped with Scotland leading 82-1 after 18.
Scotland 90 (Michael Jones 45 not out
George Munsey and Michael Jones made headlines for Scotland as they batted brilliantly to put them in an advantageous position against England, before rain caused the match to be abandoned. Their 95-run partnership took them close to reaching a target of 109 in ten overs (revised after delay). While they will undoubtedly be disappointed that they couldn’t complete what had been an exciting innings, their performance had provided their nation hope in Group Stage of tournament.
The second delay lasted longer, lasting 2-1/4 hours and costing significant play time as raindrops came and went. Players returned to the field after one hour, only for rain to return at drinks break time and once more delay ensue.
Once play resumed, the pitch offered some purchase and England’s bowlers showed signs of life. Mark Wood thought he had caught Munsey off 16, skying one high towards deep third; but the umpire adjudged that England fast bowler delivered a front foot no-ball instead.
Jones then hit two consecutive boundaries against Chris Jordan before taking a single off Adil Rashid as the Scottish batsmen showed the crowd at Kensington Oval they were in fine fettle. Jones almost fell at his other end but Jofra Archer managed a fantastic stop, keeping the ball from going over the ropes.
Munsey then top-edged a hook at Rashid’s short ball, but was spared when the umpire adjudicated that it had missed the stumps by some distance. Jones scored another boundary from Jordan’s delivery towards long on, hitting it for four. Unfortunately, rain a third time began falling just as players were about to run out, forcing the game to be abandoned with Scotland on 51 for 0. They will look to take one point from their final match against Australia in Saint Lucia this Saturday and look to take one point from this matchup
