Baartman then produced an outstanding over to limit England. Giving only four singles, he helped put pressure on their batting line-up as their required run rate began to escalate. It proved an essential contribution as England needed runs more and more quickly.
Aiden Markram came on in the 10th over and quickly picked up two wickets – including Moeen Ali who attempted to pull away but was caught at deep midwicket by Aiden’s accuracy.

South African openers Quinton de Kock and Reeza Hendricks made short work of their batting against some very poor bowling by England; with Reeza Hendricks scoring with ease they raced into an insurmountable lead on a slow pitch.
Harry Brook’s remarkable innings helped set off an exciting late fightback by England, but South Africa held their nerve and eventually saw off their opponents by dismissing Jos Buttler caught behind in the penultimate over.
Buttler attempted a quickfire slog sweep but instead found Keshav Maharaj at deep midwicket as England’s target crept past 100 runs. His loss was hugely disappointing and Buttler blamed England’s powerplays as the cause.
South Africa’s spinners have made the difference in this match with Kagiso Rabada and Ottneil Baartman both taking wickets, with Ottneil particularly making an impression with some clever slow ball deliveries that have prevented England from scoring runs easily.
Baartman bowled his final over and struck with his first delivery when Brook holed out at deep square leg – it was an unfortunate misjudgement from Mark Wood who should have held it firmly.
England require 101 runs from their final nine overs to salvage this tie; with any luck, that should be possible with some good bowling from West Indies on Thursday. They still stand a great chance at qualifying for the semi-finals by beating co-hosts West Indies on that date.
England have not been in such a strong position to win a World Cup game before this scrappy defeat against South Africa. A loss would be devastating but the team can recover by defeating United States on Friday, then winning against Windies on Sunday to seal their place in the last four.

England’s middle order found strength even without their top four batsmen, led by Harry Brook, who produced an outstanding innings despite entering when their side were in deep trouble and taking calculated risks by targeting balls in specific zones he targeted the right balls and zones; leaving England poised for a super over. Unfortunately a mishit when they needed just one hit to clear the infield cost them dearly as mishitting cost them the game.
Kagiso Rabada bowls the final over, which proves critical for South Africa. His opening ball strikes Livingstone square on his pads; he attempts to flick it over mid-off but misses, leading to an appeal but no catch is given.
Rabada delivers an outstanding over, conceding only two runs off it. He then dismisses Buttler with his fourth delivery; short and pitched towards the stumps but Buttler attempts a back-foot hook which Rabada easily captures at point.
England are currently one wicket down and in real danger of falling short of their target. De Kock’s exceptional innings – 68 off 22 balls (4×4, 4×6) was not enough to keep scoring underway, though David Miller contributed a valuable 43 off 28 balls (11×4) late resistance that saved their day.
Moeen Ali bowls the Powerplay over and keeps it to six runs off this over, before returning to attack and bowling to Bairstow; who attempts to sweep but gets an inside edge which flew past short fine-leg for four. In an incredible catch by Anrich Nortje he then attempted reverse sweep but failed to make contact and was out lbw! England are short by 14 runs in their final over unless there is either no-ball or wide, which could prove fatal as they need another hero from somewhere or they could lose this match! England desperately need someone special from somewhere within their ranks to step up and play some quality cricket; something they have not done for most of this tournament so far!

Quinton de Kock’s remarkable fifty helped South Africa withstand England’s late surge and claim a seven-run win in their Group 2 Super Eight T20 World Cup match at Gros Islet. While their victory wasn’t easy to come by, South Africa held on and will head into their next match against USA with confidence.
England made a poor start, reaching only 163/6 after Phil Salt was dismissed by Kagiso Rabada in their opening over. As they struggled further after that and eventually fell short with only Harry Brook and Liam Livingstone providing any resistance.
De Kock strikes his maiden boundary against Hendricks with an exquisite backward point shot, befitting an opener who was so impressive against Australia on Friday.
Reeza Hendricks is an outstanding opening batsman who can sometimes go astray. If he wants to score big against English bowlers, however, Reeza must be uncompromising and aggressive if he hopes to succeed.
Topley produced an excellent over, not offering Hendricks any width and defending the leg side effectively. To start things off he flicked down a full toss for a single at fine leg before giving Hendricks another short ball which was pushed through cover point to bring up three dot balls in this over.
Jofra Archer steps on to bowl the penultimate over, and strikes immediately with Hendricks failing to connect with its first ball – it presents him with an opportunity for revenge if they miss.
Hendricks appears eager to score quick runs, flicking a full toss down to third man for four runs off a full toss delivery straight down. Such shots should help him create big scores as so far they have been off his form.
Heinrich Klaasen produced an amazing catch to remove Jonny Bairstow. Bairstow attempted to smash an off-spinner from Rabada but instead it landed in his hand, prompting him to hit it hard towards extra cover where Ottneil Baartman took an excellent catch and stop England from building momentum. That wicket will certainly prove crucial!
