The inaugural match was played on 4 November 1934 and the tournament was named after Ranjitsinhji, who represented England and Sussex, while Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala donated the trophy.
Over time, the tournament has undergone various modifications in terms of format. At first, Bombay dominated proceedings; winning 15 straight titles within 19 years before other sides made their mark; Vidarbha has especially made waves lately by winning three consecutive crowns and could set new history this year!
India hosts many other domestic competitions besides the Ranji Trophy. These include the Duleep Trophy – an List A 50-over competition first launched in 1961 – and Vijay Hazare Trophy, which allows teams from different state to compete against one another in limited overs format.
Domestic cricket season kicks off on October 11 with the Ranji Trophy Elite Division starting October 11, lasting until November 5 and then being hosted in its entirety from January 17 to February 3. Meanwhile, its knockout stage runs from January 17 to February 3, while Plate Division starts December 19 and finishes five days earlier at December 24.
Meanwhile, Cooch Behar Trophy features two stages – Kolkata will host its elite phase, while Knockouts are hosted by Mumbai and Delhi; fans will appreciate being able to attend matches closer to home, where their favorite players play live! Unlike past seasons which hosted all Knockouts directly – fans will appreciate being able to see them live!
