Group Stage
The Group Stage of the World Cup features all 20 teams competing in a round-robin tournament format, with only the top two teams from each group qualifying for Super Eight stage competition and competing to reach final.
The 2026 edition of the World Cup will set a record number of groups, featuring 12 teams in each of four groups based on FIFA zones – no group will contain more than one European or any of five other zones team.
Each team plays three matches during the Group Stage. A win earns three points; draws are awarded one point; losses incur no points.
If teams finish tied at the end of a Group Stage match-up, tiebreakers may include goal differential, head-to-head results and then drawing lots as ways out.
India, Pakistan, the Netherlands and Namibia form Group A while former champions Australia are placed into Group B along with co-host Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and Oman;
England/West Indies will join New Zealand/South Africa to form Group C; Zimbabwe/Ireland were initially in Group C but withdrew due to security concerns; Bangladesh originally were included before withdrawing.
Super Eight Stage
After the group stage, the tournament progresses into Super Eights with two top teams from each group moving onto semi-finals; Colombo hosts its semifinal and Kolkata will host theirs, before their respective winners meet up in a final on March 5.
Pakistan became the latest team to qualify for the Super Eights on Wednesday by beating Namibia in Group A match.
Pakistan joins India, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand England and Zimbabwe as two groups of four are hosted by India and Sri Lanka respectively; unlike in Group Stages points and net run rates will not carry over into Super Eights competitions.
The International Cricket Council will seed teams that advanced through the group stage of the World Cup accordingly. Each group of four will feature two defending champions and their top two competitors from each group qualifying for semi-finals; two spots in each group will then be filled by their next-best finishers.
Australia and India were automatically guaranteed their places in the Super 8 stage, while four spots were allocated through direct qualification pathways. Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Ireland earned spots in this round as well. Semi-finalist teams will qualify for inclusion in 2028 event being hosted by Australia/New Zealand.
All matches in the Super 8 stage of the World Cup will take place either in India or Sri Lanka, with both countries providing stadiums to host each match – matches will take place at either R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo or Pallekele Cricket Stadium in Kandy. A schedule for Super 8 Stage can be seen below.
The Super Eights will include nine matches in total, including two semifinals and a final. The top-two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals while any tied third-place teams will play in a third-place match which may require super over.
Semi-finals and the final of the World Cup will take place at ICC Headquarters in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The winning team of the final will receive the Muhammad Ali Trophy and Sir Richard Hadlee Trophy – with both earning automatic entry into 2028 event being hosted in Australia and New Zealand respectively.
On March 8th 2019, live coverage in United States of the final will air with England competing to become its inaugural winners!
Semi-Finals
After the group stage, the tournament narrows to eight teams. Every side will play each other once in round-robin format before moving onto Super Eight phase; top two teams from each group advance to Super Eight round with four semi-finals and the final scheduled over two days at Colombo’s R. Premadasa Stadium should Pakistan make it.
India have been assigned to Group A alongside archrival Pakistan, the Netherlands and Namibia; Zimbabwe are co-hosts with Sri Lanka, West Indies and South Africa in Group 1.
England and New Zealand have been combined in Group 2, while Pakistan, Ireland and Oman will compete against England and New Zealand in Group 3. Finally, Scotland Nepal Italy form Group C; each group comprises four teams and will rotate locations.
