Bangladesh: 159/5 (Shakib Al Hasan 64 not out)

Shakib Al Hasan contributed an unbeaten 64 in Bangladesh’s impressive total of 159 for five against Netherlands at Arnos Vale Ground in Kingstown on Thursday, hitting nine boundaries in his innings and making invaluable contributions alongside Tanzid Hasan (35) and Mahmudullah (25).

Before Aryan Dutt came on as replacement for Teja Nidamanuru, offspinner Aryan Dutt quickly put Bangladesh on its back foot at 23 for two. Shakib and Tanzid worked wonders by sharing in a 48-run partnership for the third wicket with Mahmudullah’s late contribution of 25 runs off 21 balls with fours and sixes helping Bangladesh post an impressive total of 159 for five from 20 overs.

Netherlands batsmen struggled in their response, losing Michael Levitt and Max O’Dowd early with just 22-2 in the scorecard. Vikramjit Singh and Sybrand Engelbrecht put on an unlikely 42-run stand to give some hope of an unlikely win; but Bangladesh bowling ensured they never quite reached their target, finishing 25 runs short of it.

Rishad Hossain (3/33) stood out with the ball for Bangladesh, dismantling the Dutch middle order and denying them opportunities to form significant partnerships. Taskin Ahmed (2/30), Mustafizur Rahman (1/12) and Tanzim Hasan Sakib (1/23) all shared wickets for Bangladesh as well. Bangladesh now have four points from three games and are in strong contention to join South Africa in the Super Eights. They will face Nepal for one final Group matchup on Monday. The Netherlands face an uphill struggle and need to defeat Sri Lanka by two points for any chance at progression. Virender Sehwag had taken issue with team management’s decision to retain Shakib despite his poor form, yet on Thursday managed to get himself back in form by making an unbeaten half century which will hopefully inspire his side towards a positive finish in this tournament.

Netherlands: 159/6 (Sybrand Engelbrecht 40 not out)

Netherlands were on track to chase down Bangladesh’s modest total in their T20 opener against them but ultimately fell short due to leg-spinner Rishad Hossain’s spell, restricting them to just 159/6 at the end of their innings and keeping Shakib Al Hasan unbeaten on 64 with Tanzid Hasan and Mahmudullah scoring runs from their middle order batsmen. Shakib Al Hasan scored unbeaten 64 while Tanzid Hasan and Mahmudullah both hit key runs from their batsmen as Shakib Al Hasan scored unbeaten 64 from his bat while Tanzid Hasan hit crucial runs while Tanzid Hasan and Mahmudullah made crucial runs from middle order batsmen during middle order batted only to restricting them to score of 159/6 when all out batted at end of innings innings bat.

The Netherlands have proven themselves as one of the top T20 teams worldwide since making their first World Cup appearance in 1992, qualifying for six out of nine World Cups since then. Unfortunately, they had struggled for consistency this tournament and found themselves at the bottom of their group after two defeats and a draw; needing a victory here to qualify for Super Eights; however they achieved it thanks to some impressive batting and bowling performances!

Dutch skipper Scott Edwards introduced Aryan Dutt in the second over, and he immediately saw results. Dutt took out Najmul Hossain Shanto with an innocent-looking length ball outside off that the batsman mistimed and was caught at first slip. Litton Das attempted a risky shot but Sybrand Engelbrecht made an incredible diving catch at deep square leg from his marker position – both wickets took just two balls each!

Dutch were in danger of folding quickly when Engelbrecht and captain Edwards rebuilt their innings with an unbroken 42-run partnership from 36 balls, providing a powerful showing. These pair of batsmen looked set to give Bangladesh a tough challenge until Edwards made an unexpected strategic shift and turned over control of Rishad Hossain who instantly paid dividends by throwing him the ball backwards into play – giving the Dutch an immediate surge in momentum.

Rishad initially received some rough treatment during his opening over, but recovered well with several wicket-taking overs – particularly his legbreak that dismissed de Leede in particular – to help reduce Netherlands to 134-8 with two overs remaining.

The Dutch were still hoping for victory but never quite got back into it after losing four wickets against Taskin Ahmed (2/30), Mustafizur Rahman (3/33) and Rishad’s seam attack of Taskin Ahmed (2/30), Mustafizur Rahman (3/33) and Rishad; this left them struggling at 134-8 with six overs left to play. Bangladesh’s bowlers quickly wrapped up the match within overs, a decisive victory that puts one foot into Super Eights while forcing the Dutch into needing a miracle in order to qualify. They will play Nepal for their last league match on Friday – both teams currently sitting at four points with three wins and one loss each. It was their fourth meeting in T20 internationals; Bangladesh won all three previous contests.

Final Scorecard

Bangladesh have sealed their first World Cup win through an exceptional performance with the bat. Liton Das and Shakib Al Hasan led from the front, hitting five sixes as Liton Das passed 50 off 25 balls while Shakib Al Hasan hit four sixes to go beyond 50 off 25 balls – Mahmudullah also contributed by scoring 25 off 21 deliveries for Bangladesh.

Bangladesh’s bowlers led by leg-spinner Rishad Hossain were outstanding too. Although Rishad took some early battering from Dutch batsman Engelbrecht, his leg break delivered an emphatic blow for Bangladesh to seize control of this matchup.

Netherlands captain Scott Edwards won the toss and decided to field first. Off-spinner Aryan Dutt struck early, dismissing Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and opener Liton Das for 22 runs each; however, Shakib and Mahmudullah rallied with an excellent 48-run third wicket partnership that held up.

Dutch cricket started strong with Michael Levitt (26) and Max O’Dowd (14) both reaching double figures in their innings, but ultimately could not maintain momentum with either bat or ball.

Sybrand Engelbrecht’s entertaining 33 off 22 balls came to an abrupt end in the 16th over, when his hopes of leading his side back were dashed by Taskin Ahmed’s three-wicket haul and Bangladesh secured their position as top two of Group D for qualification into Super Eights. Bangladesh have one more match left against Nepal who also hold strong hopes in reaching Super Eights status.
